The Dunne family have been farming near Enniscorthy for generations. The finest quality milk from their dairy herd is used to produce creamy Killowen Farm yogurt. Responding to consumer demand for fresh, locally-sourced, seasonal ingredients, the Dunnes have teamed up Des Jeffares, a third generation blackcurrant grower from southeast Wexford. The result, a Limited Edition Wexford Blackcurrant Yogurt will be launched in Pettitts SuperValu, St. Aidan’s Shopping Centre, Wexford on Tuesday November 6th at 11.00 am.
Fresh, natural, real and local. These are the cornerstones on which Nicholas & Judith Dunne’s Killowen Farm yogurt business is built. The primary ingredient- milk from the Dunne’s herd of 150 cows- travels just metres from the milking parlour to the production facility where the yogurt is made. A combination of live cultures, developed over the past 30 years, is added to the milk to produce a distinctively tangy yogurt which has developed its own dedicated customer fan base in the south east.
Killowen Farm’s market research showed that consumers are genuinely trying to support local Irish businesses. Consumers also want to eat food that is free from artificial additives and is made as naturally as possible. Sustainability is another factor and consumers are conscious of airmiles and the impact the production of their food has on the environment.
With all of this in mind the Dunnes embarked on a project to utilize as many locally-sourced and natural ingredients as possible. An obvious choice was Wexford fruit, which has long been renowned throughout Ireland for its high quality and delicious taste.
First stop was Drinagh, Wexford, where Des Jeffares’ annual blackcurrant crop was about to be harvested. Blackcurrants are classified as a “superfruit”, rich in vitally important Vitamin C, and other nutrients, which boost the immune system. They are also known for their antioxidants, which banish "free radicals' from the blood stream to help keep the heart healthy, and some say they can help in the fight against cancer too. Des’ blackcurrants and the Dunnes’ luscious creamy yogurt were an ideal combination- and so the Limited Edition Blackcurrant Yogurt was born.
This is the first in a series of Limited Editions which Killowen Farm aim to produce, bringing an additional element of seasonality to what is already a locally produced, natural and healthy yogurt. Prettily packaged in a reusable glass jar, we are delighted to have the Limited Edition Blackcurrant Yogurt join our other glass jar flavours: Strawberry, Raspberry, Blueberry, Lemon Curd and Natural. Recommended Retail Price is €1.29 for the 140 gram jar.
The launch of the Limited Edition Blackcurrant Yogurt will be held on Tuesday November 6th at 11 am in Pettitts SuperValu, St. Aidans’s Shopping Centre, Wexford, and all are welcome. The yogurt will be on sale in Pettitts Super Valu, Wexford, Gorey and Enniscorthy and will also be distributed to other stockists over the coming weeks.
