Our Review of Scannells Lunchroom

Clonakilty is a lively little town. Colourful houses and traditional shop fronts create a vibrant seaside feeling in this little West Cork outpost. The long sandy beaches of Inchydoney lie just a few kilometres drive away. Great for a bracing walk to admire one of the most scenic spots of this beautiful region. But before that, you’ll be wanting some refreshment and sustenance. Down a small side street in the centre of town, Scannell’s Lunch Room at Scannell’s pub provides that in spades.

Scannell's serves lunch Monday to Friday. Local produce is at the heart of the Lunch Room menu. Good Food Ireland butcher Michael O’Neill, whose shop is a few hundred yards walk away in Clonakilty town, supplies all the meats. Fish comes from a Baltimore fisherman turned fishmonger. . Vegetable accompaniments are sourced from small holders in West Cork – organic and chemical free growers who aren’t frightened of experimenting with new things in the garden. Here you have a concise menu full of regional tastes and superlative quality ingredients.

Scannell’s is a time honoured Irish pub, with middle of the day eating at the Lunch Room as part of the attraction. A cosy fire in the front lounge sends the peaty aromas of Irish turf into the air – nothing like that smell for making you feel welcome and at home. The lounge extends to the rear with a heated covered terrace out the back. In the summer months, further seating beyond the terrace allows for totally al fresco dining and drinking when the sun shines. In food terms, a blackboard and printed table menu displays the main course daily specials.  All are based on availability and time of year. O’Neill’s well aged steak,  from Irish Angus cattle reared on the hills over Inchydoney,  features in a sandwich with home cut chips – this is a popular choice and almost always available. Other dishes are planned according to what comes in the door at delivery time. There’s usually a fresh fish dish and a veggie special among the usual six mains in the selection. For lighter eating, choose a well filled sandwich on home made brown bread - it could be a Cork Cheddar, O’Neill’s gammon or Reuben Spiced Beef, or Free  Range Egg Mayo. These change often. A short list of puddings are all made in house – the Chocolate Nemesis – the Best Chocolate Cake Ever -  is an all time favourite and we’d have to agree, quite the best we’ve tasted for some while!

Scannell’s provides a full bar service with beers, spirits and wines by glass. But this is a pub where you’d probably opt for a pint of the black stuff with the beef, and a draught or bottled beer with the lighter dishes. Afterwards, enjoy freshly made coffees or tea and herbal tea with your pudding. Bellies full, that walk on the beach beckons!

Tom Durcan, craft butcher of over twenty five years experience, is a master of spiced beef. It has won him many honours. This fine Cork speciality is the underlining product at his butcher’s stall in the English market. Tom’s career began as a youngster, when he took a summer job in a butcher’s shop during school holidays. The experience proved invaluable. Working with an experienced butcher with his own slaughter house provided what Tom describes as a ‘fantastic education’ for the young novice in how to source animals, and the ground rules for good butchery.
