You couldn't find a more idyllic location than this if you tried! Rathmullan House hovers high above the shores of Lough Swilly, nestled among a mature woodland, in wild and beautiful Co Donegal. Landscaped grounds are spectacular, rolling down to an almost tropical white gold sandy beach you just want to leave your footprints on.
In keeping with its old country house traditions, you'll find all the right notes here - log fires, comfy period sitting rooms, antiques, and that air of calm that pervades these elegant old residences. Built in the 1800s, once the home of the Batt banking family. The house has been in the Wheeler Family over fifty years and is now run by husband and wife team Mark and Mary Wheeler.
You'll often find Mark stoking fires and greeting guests as they sit down for tea or coffee during the day. His presence adds the personal family touch. Bedrooms are furnished in country house style, with large beds, patchwork quilts, and some with their own French doors onto small private terraces. Relaxation is key here - with the gardens begging to be strolled in and the nearby beach calling for that morning jog or romantic gallop on a four-legged friend.
In the morning, be greeted by a generous breakfast buffet which features house Guinness and Wheaten breads and Irish Apple Juice. Unusual options populate the menus, with options like Donegal Baked Ham served with fruit compote on Carrigeen Moss (a local mild tasting seaweed). The House Full Irish Breakfast is a cornucopia of local produce. Lighter options include Stoneground Porridge with honey or prunes, smoked fish, and heavenly pancakes. Also enjoy home baked scones with homemade preserves, jams and marmalade.
Evenings at Rathmullan are for enjoying some fine cuisine at The Cook and Gardener Restaurant. The name of the restaurant reflects the trend for growing your own - this country house has its own traditional walled garden growing a variety of soft fruits, herbs and vegetables, which appear on the menu. Head Chef Muhib Azad has the joy of being able to walk out of the back door of the kitchen, to the garden, to hand pick whatever he fancies - hence the name of the restaurant, which makes the link between chef and gardener.
Rathmullan spells comfort, elegance and grace, in a beautiful and breathtaking location. Also for magical weddings - your own private residence to celebrate your marriage and house your guests in comfort. All requirements, from private wedding banquets to full house party for up to 150 guests are catered for and looked after by the Rathmullan wedding team. Rathmullan also has its own indoor 15m heated swimming pool.
