The Tap Room is located in the basement with its own outdoor terrace, open during busy summer season. Here you can sit out, while enjoying the spoils of the menu. This is relaxed, casual and above all tasty. The menu is always changing to suit the season, but the focus here is on real stone baked pizzas from the outdoor wood fired pizza oven. These are not to be missed, you can sit back in the gorgeous surrounds as the sensuous smell of wood fired pizza and melting artisan cheese fills the air.

Our Review of Rathmullan House - The Cook and Gardener Restaurant

Mark Wheeler runs a pretty cool operation at Rathmullan House. This welcoming Culinary Accommodation provides a get away from it all break on the banks of Lough Swilly in Donegal. A short stroll through the gardens leads to a path right down to the beach. Rooms are comfortable, and some have their own private terraces looking out over the gardens.

Needless to say, great food lies at the heart of this great country house. The Cook and Gardener Restaurant specialises in modern Irish country house dining, for its overnight guests and the public. Situated in a conservatory style space, this dining room reflects the trend for growing your own to supply the menu. Rathmullan has its own walled garden, with a prolific growth of seasonal fruits, herbs and vegetables throughout the year.

The chefs, lead by Head Chef Muhib Azad, nip outside to gather what they want from the garden for accompaniments and garnishes. How fresh is that?! Airy and light during breakfast and daytime eating, The Cook and Gardener's tented ceiling bedecked with tiny fairy lights lends an intimate atmosphere in the evenings. Contemporary looks are favoured over more traditional country house dining room furnishings - linen is forsaken for the clean lines of uncluttered tables which let the food on the plates speak.

Along with walled garden produce, lots of fresh fish and shellfish. Donegal Bay Mackerel, John Dory, Brill and Crab all play a role in the kitchen. Meat eaters will enjoy game in season, Irish beef, lamb and pork. What Muhib does with all these things is not to be predicted! But be assured his own personal twist is always present. Modern and traditional Irish combines with the influences of previous experience and more than a little creative flair, to compose Rathmullan's set dinner menu plus a varied a la carte selection.

Desserts are made in house, and a cheeseboard reflects Ireland's top status as a cheese producing country to be reckoned with. The well collated wine list sets about to compliment the country house style, mixing classic Old and New World with a few great global finds tucked in there. Efficient service from experienced staff has the touch of the Irish country house friendliness about it.

Batt's Bar, set in one of the house's downstairs drawing rooms, has a log fire to beckon you in for a drink before dinner, or coffees and liqueurs afterwards. A good place to relax and meet the other diners and house guests, all of whom have plenty to rave about on the gourmet front after a gorgeous dinner at The Cook and Gardener.

Mark's father Bob, the original owner and founder of Rathmullan House, often makes an appearance to welcome overnight guests and diners alike, and make stunning arrangements of seasonal shrubbery and flowers from the garden. He aslo makes a pretty mean jar of marmalade - quite a few jars in fact, and it's won awards! This is served at breakfast along with other house jams and preserves made from fruits from the garden, and is available to buy in reception.  A tasty souvenir to take home with you.

Tom Durcan, craft butcher of over twenty five years experience, is a master of spiced beef. It has won him many honours. This fine Cork speciality is the underlining product at his butcher’s stall in the English market. Tom’s career began as a youngster, when he took a summer job in a butcher’s shop during school holidays. The experience proved invaluable. Working with an experienced butcher with his own slaughter house provided what Tom describes as a ‘fantastic education’ for the young novice in how to source animals, and the ground rules for good butchery.
