Located on a scenic spot right by the Pier in Ballyvaughan Village, Monks Ballyvaughan Seafood Restaurant & Bar was founded in the 1980s and was initially a food store and local bar where locals would congregate and catch up. Local food has always been an integral part of Monks and this has only grown as the business evolved to what it is today. They are longstanding ambassadors for the food of this region. A major restoration in 2016 brought Monks to the next level and allowed the team to meet the demands and popularity of this much loved eatery. All modern conveniences seamlessly combined with the traditional features that are such a part of Monks.
It's hard to compete with Monks for scenic dining especially on a sunny day in spring or summer. Dine on the patio outside taking in the fresh sea air as you enjoy views of Ballyvaughan Bay right ahead of you. With this view, a plate of delicious oysters and pint of the Guinness in front of you, we cannot think of a more satisfying experience!
Reading the menu at Monks is like taking a whistle stop food tour of Clare and beyond. Fresh mussels, crab, clams, lobster and more are all sourced from local fishermen who bring in their catch off this wild coast. Their famous oysters are provided by Kelly Oysters, whose farm is located in a small inlet of nearby Galway Bay. While fish and seafood is the main attraction here, Monks also features ingredients from artisan producers of the region including goat's cheese from a prominent local cheese maker. Greens for salads and sides are supplied by a local farmer growing organic leaves, vegetables and herbs.
You'll have a tough time deciding on what to choose from the menu, it's all so amazing. Their famous Seafood Chowder will warm you up in no time after a brisk day of being outdoors and exploring the nearby Burren. The Fishcakes feature salmon, cod, smoked coley and potato covered in tasty panko crumbs, these always go down a treat with diners. You can't go wrong with a traditional Fish and Chips and Monks' take on this classic will have you returning to enjoy over and over again. Showstoppers on the menu include an impressive Seafood Platter featuring a selection of local smoked salmon, crab, oysters, and prawns served with the traditional marie rose sauce and brown bread. It's too good to share! Go all out with the Local Lobster presented with a baked potato and a choice of garlic butter or thermidor. For those who would prefer something a bit meatier, a 10oz Sirloin Steak and a Traditional Beef Stew are also on the menu. Whatever your choice may be in the end you'll be assured of a fantastic feast that will have raving about your experience at Monks to family and friends. The menu changes with the seasons so you'll always have something new to enjoy.
Your visit to Monks will be complimented by the warm and attentive hospitality of the staff both in and out of the kitchen.
