Overview

Jack and Celine Healy have a fantastic little operation in the Kerry town of Kilorglin. Jack is a master baker of some substantial repute. In the tiny kitchen at the back of the shop, he bakes wondrous breads, scones, pastries and all sorts of nice things to eat. Early starts mean great bread.

Celine looks after the shop side of things, and has brought her love of good food into full play by sourcing a range of artisan products from home and abroad. As she says, the Healy's pride themselves on still being a good old ''corner shop', which is in effect true, given the location on the corner of Lower Bridge Street. But this corner shop is one we'd all love at the end of the road. Alongside the small section of ''essentials' like household items and newspapers, you'll find a gourmet selection of fresh and storecupboard items, Irish and continental farmhouse cheeses and hand made charctuerie adorn the delicatessen counter. Artisan chocolates share shelf space with single estate olive oils, and designer vinegars. A range of Italian artisan made pasta sauces and free-range egg pastas provide dinner in a dash. Find also a super choice of teas and coffees, including Fair Trade and organic options, local free range eggs, Ballycross Apple Juice, Gubbeen bacon rashers, Clonakilty Black and White puddings, and Irish jams and preserves, all of which go toward creating the ultimate Full Irish breakfast. The couple's love of wine is also reflected in the compact but stunning selection of reds and whites on offer. Worth a stop at Jack's in Kilorglin  - this town is the place for the annual Puck Fair and you'll find it easily by the large male goat statue at the main entrance into town. A rather handsome brute he is too! If you'e into goats...

Tom Durcan, craft butcher of over twenty five years experience, is a master of spiced beef. It has won him many honours. This fine Cork speciality is the underlining product at his butcher’s stall in the English market. Tom’s career began as a youngster, when he took a summer job in a butcher’s shop during school holidays. The experience proved invaluable. Working with an experienced butcher with his own slaughter house provided what Tom describes as a ‘fantastic education’ for the young novice in how to source animals, and the ground rules for good butchery.
