The Irish Whiskey Experience and Celtic Bar & Larder, Killarney, Co Kerry

In the heart of Killarney,  an exciting visitor attraction is drawing attention. The Irish Whiskey Experience is a genius, sensory and interactive way to learn about Irish whiskey, in a welcoming environment dedicated to this famous spirit.  Dreamed up by Ally Alpine of the legendary Celtic Whiskey Shop in Dublin, he brings 30 years of expertise to this  venture in Kerry.  It’s worth noting before you visit that what Ally doesn’t know about whiskey probably isn’t worth knowing! Here is a serious industry player, an expert on whiskey, icon of whiskey retail and a sharer of knowledge, all in one. Who better to help you take your first steps into the world of whiskey.

The atmospheric premises of the Irish Whiskey Experience brings education, appreciation, knowledge and expertise together in a way that makes it easy to learn about Ireland’s Uisce Beatha (water of life), as Irish whiskey is known. Well established relationships with the whiskey industrys' top brands is accompanied by an independent approach to exchanging knowledge from Ally and his team.

Ally says ‘We take a non-biased view of all Irish whiskeys. We want people to discover for themselves which they think is the best. We run classes all day, every day. Themes are varied, and suitable for various levels of experience.’

Whiskey is taken very seriously here, but the approach is intended to make it fun and enjoyble for everyone who attends the classes.  Masterclasses at the Irish Whiskey Experience include Distillers Apprentice - an Introduction to Whiskey, The Classic Irish – Single Pot Still Tasting, The Cooper, Cask finished Irish Whiskeys,  Master Distiller – an Introduction to Premium Irish Whiskey and Blender’s Challenge – Blend your own Irish Whiskey. These are suitable for groups who are already interested in whiskey.

For complete novices and those who haven’t enjoyed whiskey too often before, Whiskey With A Twist classes include Bainne and Grain – An Irish Whiskey and Farmhouse Cheese Pairing, and Golden Ticket – Irish Whiskey and Chocolate Pairing. You can also get handy with a spirit measure and participate in The Whiskey Alchemist, to make your own  Irish Whiskey cocktails. All subjects intended to pique your interest and get you wanting to know more about Ireland’s most famous drink!

Also at this visitor attraction is the Celtic Whiskey Bar & Larder. A bar and restaurant which showcases local foods, a premier Irish, Scotch and International Whiskey collection, Irish and international craft beers and ciders, cocktails and Irish craft spirits and liqueurs.

A totally Irish food and drink experience in a casual dining atmosphere. Ally says ‘We are using quality local ingredients sourced around Killarney and in Kerry where possible,  and keeping our dishes very simple. We are trying to educate with our choice of food, as well as giving people a good time. Our staff have an ongoing training programme which includes visits to whiskey distilleries in Ireland and Scotland, and ongoing food and wine training.’

The Irish food experience here includes morning snacks focused on homemade scones with Glenilen West Cork butter, or the famous Waterford Blaa with sausages and relish. At lunch you can enjoy little nibbles to go with drinks or an Irish cheese plate, as well as the Irish classic soup of the day and sandwich, light salads, a chowder of Kerry seafood  or some steamed local mussels. Mains feature local fish from the Kerry coastline of the Wild Atlantic Way, Kerry lamb, pork and beef and a seasonal vegetarian dish. Mini versions of favourite home made dishes are served for the ‘Younger People’. Follow up with a selection of house desserts, or an Irish Coffee, which can be made with your own choice of whiskey at an extra cost.

Staff are happy to recommend a drink to go with your menu choice, or watch out for the Whiskey of The Week. Breakfast lunch and dinner is served daily and the Celtic Whiskey Bar & Larder is also the perfect spot for a group outing, party or special event.
