Our Review of Indigo Lounge at Clontarf Castle

If you’re looking for a hip place to meet the buds on Dublin’s northside, we might just have the answer.

Indigo Lounge at historic Clontarf Castle ticks all  the boxes. This lounge may well be situated in a historic castle with centuries of history, but Indigo bucks the trend of castle mania in decor terms, in favour of adopting a quirky interior design style worthy of a chic Parisian bar.  As it’s name suggests, indigo blues and violets dominate the colour scheme. Red crystal chandeliers and glass mozaic columns add a bit of glam. We love the mix of disco glitz meets Baroque furnishings in the Queene Anne inspired furnishings.  A row of elegant well padded high stools at the bar, with comfortable lounge chairs, sofas and  wooden tables characteristic of the period feature across the main lounge space.

In food terms, you can start here at eight in the morning with coffee and house pastries, and go right through to the evening with an aperitif or glass of wine and some relaxed lounge food. A selection of casual dining dishes and snacks are available. But the one thing you really shouldn’t miss here is Indigo’s Fusion Afternoon Tea.
What is a Fusion AfternoonTea? We thought we would leave that to Clontarf Castle’s General Manager Jason Ormston to explain! He says, ‘Afternoon Tea has become very popular again in hotel lounges. We saw an opportunity to create something unique at Indigo. We wanted a fine balance of the time honoured with  the contemporary, so that both would be equally prominent. We felt it would be wonderful to pay respects to the tradition of Afternoon Tea, but to introduce a new twist.

For example, instead of white linen on the tables, as is usual, we use beautiful handmade table runners in shades of raspberry and pink. We have swapped the formal tiered cake stands for open sided wooden tiered display boxes, which present the two courses of savoury and sweet tea time treats in a very different way. The familiar Afternoon Tea foods are also given a different edge. For example, we have taken the ham finger sandwich concept and created from that a flaked ham hock on a brioche bun, topped with crispy onion, for something very different indeed. Our Fusion Tea marries all the aspects of the familiar ceremony and foods of Afternoon Tea, but has it’s own individual style. We think of it as a genuine fusion of traditional flavours with contemporary style.’

We couldn’t agree more Jason! Indigo also makes a fab space for the 'day after the wedding' party or a special celebration party. It opens out on to a gorgeous decking terrace, where you can enjoy private dining with the Indigo barbecue experience. No ordinary barbecue, as Jason says, this is a gourmet feast cooked over the coals outdoors.  Choose from the Deluxe Menu or the Indulgence Menu. You’re not going to be disappointed with either!

Perfect for an after wedding feast for guests who stay on, or for family celebrations and gatherings and business get-togethers.

Tom Durcan, craft butcher of over twenty five years experience, is a master of spiced beef. It has won him many honours. This fine Cork speciality is the underlining product at his butcher’s stall in the English market. Tom’s career began as a youngster, when he took a summer job in a butcher’s shop during school holidays. The experience proved invaluable. Working with an experienced butcher with his own slaughter house provided what Tom describes as a ‘fantastic education’ for the young novice in how to source animals, and the ground rules for good butchery.
