Our Review of The Garden Room Restaurant at the Great Southern Killarney

The Garden Room Restaurant is the fine dining restaurant at the Great Southern Killarney. A room packed with the grandeur of the architectural period in which it was built, The Garden Room combines Victorian elegance in elaborate cornicing on the typical high ceilings, which are gilded with miles of real gold leaf. A flamboyant fireplace is a focal point of this room, which is flooded with light from big sash windows. In the evenings, table lamps, candles and chandeliers give an intimate air to a gentile dining space dressed with white linen, shining silver and gleaming glassware.

The sense of something special going on is only heightened when you take to your table. A knowledgeable Sommelier will appear as you browse the menu. He’ll be only too pleased to recommend wines to go with your choices. Great Southern Killarney is home to The Killarney Wine Rooms, a dedicated space for fine wines from all over the world, all available to enjoy with your meal.

Head Chef Rory Gabriel from Sri Lanka takes charge in the kitchen. He has been cooking for 26 years, working in his home country for five years before travelling to work in international hotel chains. He made Ireland his home in 2006 and has fallen in love with Kerry and its people. Rory’s varied cookery background and training gives him a real taste for fusion cooking, all the while focusing on the use of fresh Kerry produce to form the backbone of his creative flair. As he says, "you will find classic Irish cooking here - but always with a twist."

Rory’s signature dish of Ring of Kerry lamb is sourced from farms on the majestic hillsides of the Ring of Kerry, with livestock grazing on wild grasses, herbs and rich sweet grassy pasture. Not to be missed.

You’ll also find fantastic fish from the waters of the Atlantic Ocean which borders Kerry, plus sweet-as-a-nut scallops from Kilmore Quay in Co. Wexford. Beef is well aged from Irish Hereford cattle, a traditional beef breed which produces tender succulent meat. Local cheeses come from artisan cheesemakers in Kenmare Bay and goats’ cheese from rural Co. Kerry. Some breads come from artisan bakers while others are house baked. Desserts are all made in house.

Residents and visitors can also avail of a leisurely breakfast in The Garden Room Restaurant. Rory sources his free range eggs from Watergrasshill in Cork and local bacon and black pudding from Listowel in North Kerry. A real treat of an Irish breakfast in store, as well as lighter options with fruit, yogurt, cereals and house pastries.

Tom Durcan, craft butcher of over twenty five years experience, is a master of spiced beef. It has won him many honours. This fine Cork speciality is the underlining product at his butcher’s stall in the English market. Tom’s career began as a youngster, when he took a summer job in a butcher’s shop during school holidays. The experience proved invaluable. Working with an experienced butcher with his own slaughter house provided what Tom describes as a ‘fantastic education’ for the young novice in how to source animals, and the ground rules for good butchery.
