Overview

It would be a shame to pass through the thriving little village of Castledawson without stopping at Ditty's Home Bakery and Coffee Shop, owned by master baker Robert Ditty. Park the car on the main street in the early morning and you'll get the wonderful aroma of fresh baking. Follow your nose and it will lead you to straight to the original home of Ditty's.

This coffee shop is a fine place to refresh the inner person, take in the history of this premises, the original family bakery purchased by Robert's father in 1963, and just get a sense of a second generation baker  totally dedicated to his work. Every creation here is testament to the years of experience Robert has built up, starting as a youngster working beside his father, a master baker of his time.

When visiting here, you have a choice - you can top at the shop counter to buy one of the delicious scones or pastries to take home. But we bet you will choose to hang around a while and relax with a snack, lunch, or tea and coffee with a tempting pastry- there are just too many to resist.  For those alone or time to kill, newspapers are thoughtfully left on every table. Everything served here is cooked in the bakery behind the shop, using local produce. On our visit, there was even a little sign on the counter telling us that the rhubarb in the tart came from a garden just up the road. Freshly baked scones, iced fancies and buns, vanilla slices, muffins - all are served by friendly local staff. Sandwiches and rolls are available at lunchtime freshly made to order.

Tom Durcan, craft butcher of over twenty five years experience, is a master of spiced beef. It has won him many honours. This fine Cork speciality is the underlining product at his butcher’s stall in the English market. Tom’s career began as a youngster, when he took a summer job in a butcher’s shop during school holidays. The experience proved invaluable. Working with an experienced butcher with his own slaughter house provided what Tom describes as a ‘fantastic education’ for the young novice in how to source animals, and the ground rules for good butchery.
