Our Review of Cava Bodega

A touch of Iberian culture comes to Galway city in the form of Cava Bodega.  This quaint casual tapas bar was founded in 2008 under the previous name of Cava by JP McMahon and his wife Drigín Gaffey. No strangers to the Galway food scene, this dynamic couple have had a widely successful and positive impact with their other ventures including the casual dining spot, Tartare Café + Wine Bar along with the Michelin Starred, Aniar Restaurant.

JP and Drigín originally opened Cava in 2008, where they were inspired to showcase the very best of Spanish cuisine and wine in the form of the ever-popular phenomenon of tapas. In 2013, the opportunity came to re-invigorate and expand this much loved restaurants by locals and tourists alike. This came in the form of a larger location on Middle Street along with a newly focused menu bringing together Spanish influences and local Irish food. And what a winning combination it has been. Drigín also brought her exceptional talents with interior design when envisioning the space in which Cava Bodega would situate itself. This features a focus on reclaimed materials that pair seamlessly with the colourful and lively atmosphere that Cava was well known for. Thus, Cava Bodega was born and where to this day it has continued to draw diners in with its unique and refreshing take on all things tapas.

Tapas are at the heart of Cava Bodega’s menu. The restaurant proudly proclaims that it showcases over 50 regional Tapas which draws on all aspects of Spanish cooking. This is balanced well with a keen support of local infrastructure that features a wealth of local Irish suppliers who provide fresh meat, fish and vegetables.

Cava Bodega’s menu is as fun as it is varied, catering to all tastes. The vegetarian options include a delightful goat’s cheese and sweet potato croquette dish along with a empanadillas dish made with chickpea, piquillo pepper salsa and lovage oil. For meat and fish lovers there’s a large choice of both to keep you satisfied. From a paella marinera that changes daily to a range of delicious meat dishes featuring Irish favourites such as Connemara mountain lamb shoulder and Killenure dexter beef ribs. All these flavoured to perfection with a range of tasty ingredients.

No meal is complete in Cava Bodega without that perfect beverage to go with your meal. The restaurant is famous for its extensive range of beer, wine and cider running from expensive to inexpensive tastes. You will also find a range of local craft beers featured on the menu in keeping with this tantalising meshing of both Irish food and Spanish cuisine.

Many food enthusiasts are crying out for authentic food experiences and Cava Bodega successfully answers this call. Diners can enjoy all the favourite aspects of Spanish cuisine while also getting a taste of the excellent local produce that is at hand. Cava Bodega is a prime example of the popular practice of communal dining long associated with tapas. Diners come together to share a meal that is ethically sourced, this sharing of food encourages conversation around the table and offers a refreshing alternative to conventional dining practices.
