Trade is very brisk at In A Nutshell Deli as the homemade salads, bakes, quiches and ready made food to go disappear very quickly. ‘Pips’ fresh juice bar serves a selection of drinks and smoothies to order whilst the home baking stand is loaded with house soda breads, cakes, muffins and scones from the top class in house baker here. Beyond the deli, shop for whole foods and organic flours, organic oils, vinegars and sauces and Irish artisan jams, pickles and honeys and so much more.

Our Review of Cafe Nutshell

Patsy and Philip Rogers have been in the food game for many years. Their ‘In a Nutshell’ shop and deli & Cafe Nutshell are well known in New Ross for supplying a great selection of wholesome foods since 1999. This lively hub of healthy and carefully sourced products and cooking ingredients attracts locals and tourists alike. The café area to the rear of the shop was born as an extension of that – a place to find the best in casual day time cooking which utilises much from local growers and suppliers.

The ethos here is and always has been; ‘it’s where we come from’, Patsy tells us. She is a self taught cook who knows how to rattle the pots and pans and work with seasonally available ingredients. A wander through her kitchens reveals floury Wexford potatoes from Kilmore, fresh firm cauliflowers and leeks from a grower in Dublin, early season ripe Irish tomatoes that have the smell of the greenhouse about them, vibrant salad leaves from a revered market gardener in the area, and fresh herbs and edible flowers grown by Philip on the roof of their establishment. This lady is proud to fly the flag for Irish produce – and more importantly – for local produce. A taste of the Wexford countryside she and Philip grew up in. ‘We try to source as much as we can from our local suppliers’, she says.  ‘We believe in supporting them and in turn the people of New Ross support us.’  This is most certainly evident in the amount of regulars who come here daily for lunch or a quick snack during the day. 

Morning menu offers organic baby oat porridge with local honey or a choice of hot croissants, rolls and paninis filled with breakfast savouries. Elevenses are a pleasure – tea or coffee with a home made scone, cookie, traditional sponge jam filled bun or light as a feather fairy cake. At lunchtime, the table menu offers a range of light bites and sandwiches. A quick look at the blackboard reveals the daily specials – created around local and seasonal Irish produce. 

The dessert cabinet is a wonder to behold. Home made meringues, tarts, roulades, cupcakes, muffins, sponge cakes and gateaux, every single one of them begging to be chosen! Small selection of wines on offer here by glass or bottle, plus a fresh smoothie and juice menu made to order. Cafe Nutshell is casual and light filled relaxed space. A characterful period room upstairs by the bakery kitchen has been renovated as a private party and function room. Groups are welcomed on a pre-booked basis. 

During the summer months (July-August) Café Nutshell is open Monday to Saturday 9.00am - 6.00pm so you have extra time to pop in for a coffee and a delicious sweet treat.
