This family-run business was set up in 1989 by Birgitta & Peter Curtin. The quality of their Smoked Salmon has grown exponentially from the pubs, hotels and restaurants in the Lisdoonvarna area to now supplying smoked salmon all over the world, within 48 hours. Carefully sourcing their quality raw materials for the Burren Smoked Salmon, Trout and Mackerel they control their own quality standards with backup of regular testing from independent laboratories and regular checks from organisations who certify them. Smokehouse Specialities, Local Produce and Crafts

In the shop and the visitor centre, Birgitta points out superb cheeses like Burren Gold and Cooleeney, as well as all the Smokehouse's fish specialities, all the while cutting off slivers here and there for tasting. The shop here stocks honeys, chocolates and other sweet treats, teas, relishes and chutneys and jams.

Step inside the cosy lounge and take a step back in time. The low ceilings and traditional polished wooden bar are still intact, and walls are adorned with pictures of musicians, that have played here on many a lively night. Wide selection of beers wines and spirits available. Tour groups welcomed, and combined visits to the Burren Smokehouse and pub arranged.

Music and Food Venue

The Burren Storehouse is the place for live music gigs, special events and great food. Homemade pizzas with a variety of toppings come straight from the built-in wood fired oven, while char-grilled local meats, fresh fish and shellfish are given the flame treatment on the charcoal grill. The menu changes every night, but it will always reflect the locality and the season with locally sourced ingredients like fish, shellfish, artisan local meats and poultry.

The Burren Microbrewery produces a range of ales all available exclusively at The Roadside Tavern and The Burren Storehouse. So you will have to go to Lisdoonvarna to taste them, and maybe meet the man who created them. Enjoy a pint of Burren Blonde, Gold, Red or Black by the fire in The Roadside Tavern, on a cold winter night when the wind is howling round the Wild Atlantic Way, and you’ll step back to an Ireland of old!

Our Review of Burren Smokehouse & Visitor Centre

This highly acclaimed, award-winning traditional smokehouse owned by Peter and Birgitta Curtin is located in the Clare village of Lisdoonvarna, very near to the Cliffs of Moher and wonderful beaches.

The smokehouse produces superb smoked salmon, trout and locally caught mackerel. Burren Smokehouse Organic Smoked Irish Salmon comes from Clare Island in Co Mayo and from the southwestern peninsulas of County Kerry.

One of the Curtin's unique creations is tender and succulent Hot Smoked Salmon with honey, lemon and dill or pepper, infused with delicate oaky flavour. The latest creation features flakes of seaweed on cold smoked salmon. These are unique marinades we think you should definitely try! 

Husband Peter is a master fish smoker - adding nothing but time, skill and patience to his raw ingredients. Fish is smoked on site here and you can get a serious waft of it as you walk up the street.

Next door to the smokehouse, a visitor centre showcases the history of fish smoking in a media presentation style, and the food shop attached stocks all the Burren Smokehouse products, plus many others from fellow Good Food Ireland Approved Providers and other Irish artisan producers.
