Our Review of Bodega Restaurant

When Cormac Cronin was deciding on a name for his restaurant in Waterford City, it came by chance, as all good things do. Before the restaurant opened, one of his chefs was on the phone to his sister, who was out of the country and in a restaurant, so the chef asked what the restaurant was called. ‘Bodega’, came the response. ‘We liked it straight away. It was just so simple.’, says Cormac.

The word ‘Bodega’ is used frequently in Spain and Portugal to describe a cosy establishment selling good food and wine. It certainly fits the bill here a this restaurant, which has been on the Waterford food scene for quite some years now. It’s popularity has grown through a menu of local and Irish produce, served in a family friendly relaxed environment.

Sourcing is conscientious. Ingredients include Waterford prime beef and Comeragh lamb, Tipperary free range pork, cheeses, charcuterie and fresh duck from West Cork, fish and shellfish from Dunmore East in Waterford and Castletownbere, West Cork, local seasonal vegetables from Ballybeg, exotic mushrooms grown in Wexford, and Buffalo Mozzarella from Macroom Co. Cork and Waterford Blaa from Walsh’s Bakehouse. House breads are made daily, including an Irish brown bread and a fully fermented sourdough. Cormac has his own smoker for fish and cheeses. Pretty impressive.

Bodega lives up to it’s name in its colourful Mediterranean feel. During the day, a vibrant atmosphere of busy folk enjoying a quick bite of lunch, from a menu of Small Plates, Salads and Sandwiches, served with house chips of course! If you’ve more time, you can go a little further and have a mighty main course choice from Irish chicken, Waterford steak or homemade burgers, fish of the day or daily vegetarian dish A nice selection of desserts rounds it all off.

In the evening, the tempo moves up a notch, as Bodega gets cosy and very popular with couples or groups of friends enjoying a gathering. There will always be a seasonal soup of the day. Or you might try the house smoked salmon cured with Waterford made gin if it’s on the menu. Lighter bites include an array of sharing tasting platters perfect for a convivial get together. Mains focus on all the local meats and fish we mentioned earlier.

Wines are sourced from small wineries and family farms, in keeping with the Bodega message. A fine selection of earthy reds for meat and brilliant clean whites for fish. Bodega also boasts ‘the best cocktails in Waterford’ with all the classics plus some unusual mixes, and even a couple of dessert cocktails. Local beers from a brewery in Tramore, plus Waterford gin, and two Waterford vodkas keep the local theme going in the drinks department. This place may have an exotic name, but it’s Irishness shines through at the table.
