Sue and Johnny McMillan have created a haven of fresh produce from their family farm operation in rural Roscommon. This busy couple plant vegetable seeds in the farm polytunnel and plant out in farm beds which are recycled throughout the season.
Sustainability and seasonality are at the heart of this business. Ballagh Farm Shop advertises what is ready to eat each week on social media and on a chalkboard at the Farm Shop. Here you'll find a list of fresh vegetables, salad leaves and herbs etc., that are available for picking and cutting. Expect to find lovely root vegetables like carrots, parsnips and swedes in the autumn and winter, while the summer bounty will be bursting with fresh tomatoes, cucumber, broccoli and more. Customers can also order vegetable boxes which they can collect from the farm or have delivered in the local area. It offers customers all the vegetables they'll need for the week, while also reassuring them that everything they eat has been grown in season and from the locality.
Ballagh Farm Shop's range of potted fresh flowers and plants will go a long way in brightening up your home especially coming into late spring and summer. You can order hanging baskets and tubs up until February and these will be then available to collect from late May, once the last of the winter frost has disappeared.
On Saturdays, an additional treat is on the menu - Johnny’s Yorkshire Pudding Wraps. This food trend has taken the world by storm, offering food enthusiasts the roast dinner experience all in one neat irresistible package. Using a freshly-made Yorkshire pudding, Johnny flattens it out into a wrap and stuffs it with hot fillings like farm-fresh onions, mushrooms and locally sourced beef. Johnny also serves a bacon version and vegetarian options too. A food experience not be missed, we say! Available April - October, and also for parties and events.
While also growing their own range of produce, Sue and Johnny take any opportunity to champion fellow local producers by selling their produce in their Farm Shop. Items range from fresh breads and Irish farmhouse cheeses to preserves, oils and sauces, juices and honey. All the delicious staples you'll often need in your fridge, pantry or kitchen cupboard.
You’ll surely be following a seasonal and sustainable pattern of food consumption when you enjoy Ballagh Farm Shop’s super range of fresh produce, they’ll also introduce you to an exciting range of local artisan produce stocked on their shelves!
