Wexford Home Preserves Win Gold at Prestigious Awards

Wexford Home Preserves, Co. Wexford, Good Food Ireland

Artisan food producers and member of Good Food Ireland, Wexford Home Preserves, have been awarded a coveted Gold Award for their Handmade Ave Maria Seville Orange Marmalade in the 2020 World Marmalade Awards and has made a donation to New Ross Meals on Wheels to celebrate.

The prestigious Dalemain World Marmalade Awards received 3,000 entries this year from 42 countries including Senegal, Kuwait, Argentina and Australia.

According to the organisers, “The quality of entries has never been higher and the winners are to be hugely congratulated for their skill, talent and inventiveness.”

Wexford Home Preserves were due to travel to Penrith, Cumbria – a scenic area in the North of England – to be presented with their Gold Award at the weekend but decided against travelling due to the Covid-19 crisis. Tom and Laura had been trying for five years to win the Gold Award, so this decision was extremely painful, but the only responsible one.

The small family business based in New Ross, Co. Wexford makes great efforts to make world-class marmalades, as well as other preserves, in their batch kitchen. The oranges used for their Gold Award winning Seville marmalade are organic and sourced from the Avé Maria family citrus farm in Seville. Tom and Laura Sinnott travel to Spain to visit the farm and make sure that the very best fruit is selected for their products. This careful and concise method of sourcing, it also seen in their other range of award winning products. Tom and Laura source indigenous Irish ingredients for their jams and preserves from local Irish growers and farmers. These include blackcurrants from fellow Good Food Ireland member Mr Jeffares Blackcurrants, among other growers.

In regards to their award winning marmalade, pips from carefully selected lemons are removed by hand and used by Wexford Home Preserves to make a natural pectin to set the marmalade, which is cooked by hand in open pots.

Wexford Home Preserves has been able to continue production as normal to date whilst monitoring and implementing the advice provided by Government, HSE, the World Health Organisation and other relevant authorities.

Every person involved in the making of Wexford Home Preserves products strictly follows meticulous hygiene and quality process regulations to ensure the safety of all.

Laura Sinnott commented “We have been striving for Gold in the World Marmalade Awards for the past five years. This is our Olympics - where the absolute best marmalade makers are judged by the best experts in the marmalade making world. So for us this is a true success and an honour. We are so grateful to our dedicated team here and to our customers.

We are, of course, sorry we couldn’t go to the Awards presentation in the UK but we know we all need to work together now to keep our loved ones safe and we will make it our business to celebrate in brighter times.”

To celebrate winning the Gold Award, Laura and Tom made a donation on behalf of Wexford Home Preserves to New Ross Meals on Wheels. Colm Caulfield, treasurer, was pleased to receive the contribution and said that it would make a big difference to those who are relying on the Meals on Wheels service especially during the Covid-19 emergency.
