Kellys Butchers Celebrating 90 Years
In 1930, halfway between the two world wars, Dominick Kelly started the business which has grown to become Kelly’s Butchers, a household name to lovers of black and white puddings and sausages. At the end of this month, the Kelly family are celebrating a remarkable 90 years in business, in their hometown of Newport, Co. Mayo.
Today Kelly’s is run by Dominick Kelly’s sons Seán and Seamus, his grandsons Kenneth and Cormac, granddaughter Shauna and most recently, great-grandson Ethan who is the fourth generation in the progressive family business. Kelly’s Butchers shop is in exactly the same place as it was in 1930, though they have expanded and developed the manufacturing and production areas ‘behind the scene’.
“This is a very significant event for the Kelly family”, said a beaming Seán Kelly who is clearly very proud of his family, “I began working here as a youngster by my father’s side, along with my brother Seamus. As the business has grown, I’ve watched my two sons Kenneth and Cormac grow into their roles and become impressive businessmen in their own right. My daughter Shauna has run Kelly’s Kitchen next door for the last eight years and made it into an award-winning business. I might be biased but I think they are all doing a fantastic job”.
Win with Kelly’s Puddings and Sausages
To celebrate the milestone, Kelly’s Butchers are giving away thousands of euros in an on-pack competition so all their customers get a chance to win. For the next few weeks, anyone buying Kelly’s Puddings and Sausages should check inside very carefully – they could be the lucky winner of €50. Watch out for the on-pack stickers.
“We wanted to include all our customers in our celebrations”, explained Kenneth. “Without them we wouldn’t have a business. This is our way of saying ‘thank you’ to everyone who buys Kelly’s products”, said Cormac. As well as the on-pack competition, all customers who make purchases in the shop will be included in a series of draws so everyone gets a chance to win.
As a business Kelly’s Butchers never stands still. New products are always being developed – like the seaweed puddings under the brand Kelly’s Wild Atlantic Puddings which recently struck gold at the Great Taste Awards. Kelly’s products are available online (www.kellysbutchers.com) and in supermarkets, butcher shops and speciality stores around the country. Next up will be the hampers which are so popular for Christmas. This family just never stop innovating – here’s to another 90 years!
