It’s International  ‘Mayo Day’  this Saturday 2nd May!  A local goverment initiative is set to promote this beautiful county in the far west of Ireland – and what a significant date to do it, as the May Bank Holiday weekend descends. 

Rua and Cafe Rua in Castlebar will be wholeheartedly supporting the initiative, truly getting into the spirit of things to bring Mayo to life in menu terms. Local produce is, as always, at the heart of the food here. From 1st-3rd May, the ‘Made in Mayo’ dinner menu will feature in the original Cafe Rua on New Antrim Street, now open every Friday evening.  During the weekend, Rua deli and Cafe Rua will feature the Mayo Hot Dog – the ‘Madre Rua’ in Irish. Using De Burca’s sausages with Carrowholly cheese, local salad leaves and sauteed spuds. The ‘Mayo  Scotch Egg’ is made with Claremorris free range eggs and Sean Kelly of Newport’s famous Black Pudding, with Rua’s delicious beetroot relish.  Or you can try ‘The Mayo Mezze’ – Rua’s resident county tasting board,  which showcases local Mayo produce and is served with a homemade drink like refreshing lemonade or Sparkling Elderflower – all for a very affordable €10.00.

In Rua shop and deli,  products of the county will as ever be championed. Over the ‘Mayo Day’ weekend. Find Old Russett cheese from the Carrowholly cheesemakers, exclusive to Rua. Matched perfectly with local preserve maker Sean Casey’s fig and quince jelly. Seasonings include Achill Island Sea Salt and Wild Wood Vinegar. When you are back at home, you might like to put your feet up with a freshly made coffe from the Bean West Coffee company. Just a few of the things the county of Mayo has to offer in food terms.
