The winter brings the best in fish and shellfish. Cold waters around the coast of Ireland give firm texture and great flavour to catches like Monk fish, Plaice, Lemon Sole, Black Sole, Hake and Haddock. Native and farmed oysters are also at their best now. Dublin Bay Prawns caught by inshore boats are large and flavourful. If you’re a fish lover, winter is the time to enjoy seafood at its absolute finest.  

Some Good Food Ireland restaurants specialise in sourcing, cooking and serving Ireland’s top-quality seafood. This quartet from Cork, Waterford and Dublin have access to the freshest fish and shellfish from local harbours, to serve their customers straight from the boat to the plate! 


Michael Cashman co-owns Murph’s Tavern with his sister Laura. This double act play a blinder, with Michael in the kitchen and Laura managing the team out front. Great views of Cork harbour through the windows, and a lunch and dinner menu which features fresh fish and seafood, Michael’s great love in the kitchen. He gets his fish delivered daily from the Cork coast and prepares it all himself in the kitchen.

You’ll find Castletownbere Scallops and Ballycotton cod, hake and monkfish among the choices. Winter hours are as follows: Dinner served from 5pm Wednesday, lunch and dinner from 12.30pm to 8.30pm Thursday and Friday, Saturdays from 12.30pm to 9pm, Sundays 12.30pm to 8pm. Closed all day Mondays and Tuesdays. 


It’s only a stone’s throw from the fishing boats at Dunmore East pier to the Lemon Tree Café and Restaurant. Which is why the fish and seafood served here is so fresh. During the week, the Lemon Tree is a lively day time café serving light breakfast, lunch and afternoon refreshments.

Dinner is also served on Fridays and Saturdays, when the place becomes an intimate candlelit space, perfect for a group outing with friends or family, or for dinner for two at one of the cosy little tables. Fish and seafood here is the speciality of the house for lunch or dinner – needless to say, when you‘re right by the sea. Joan Power and her team provide a superb service which also includes outside catering for parties and events and a food to go and ordering service for home gatherings. Winter opening hours are Tuesday to Thursday, 10am to 5pm, Friday & Saturday 10am to 9pm, Sunday 9.30am to 4pm. Closed Mondays. 


The fish and shellfish from Peter Cavistons Seafood Restaurant comes from his Food Emporium next door. Catches come from boats in Howth and other small harbours along the east coast, delivered daily to the shop. From here, it’s straight from the fishmonger’s slab to the pan, meaning the chefs at Cavistons can devise new menus at least twice a week, according to what’s best and available. A set two course of first and main comes in at just €19, a fantastic bargain, served till 7pm each evening. A full A la Carte is also served.

Lunch sittings Tuesday to Saturday 12pm, 1.30pm and 3pm. Dinner is served on Thursday, Friday and Saturday in sittings at 6pm and 8.15pm. Closed all day Sunday and Monday.
