Hayes’ Bar

The Saume, Glandore, Co Cork.

The pretty harbour village of Glandore has had many famous residents in its time – an almost all of them have graced the tables of Hayes’ Bar during their tenure. This little West Cork pub is as famous as those faces – and its success is down to longevity - and the hardworking dedicated efforts of the woman that is Ada Hayes. The pub has been part of the family since 1875, and when Ada ‘s husband Declan inherited it seventeen years ago – she swore blind they would not be the ones to let this long standing business go to ruin! As part of that philosophy, Ada sought to extend the service beyond that of a normal public house, and introduced food as a way of bringing in more business. She started with six cups, six plates, a sliced pan - and the ethos that she would keep it simple and serve the best of everything. That she has done, and continues to do to this day. And that’s why in her main but short summer season of just 90 days, it’s almost impossible to get a seat here inside or out unless you are prepared to wait.

Larkins Bar & Restaurant

Garrykennedy, Portroe, Nenagh, Co Tipperary.

It’s worth making the drive out from Nenagh to Garrykennedy to visit this picturesque little pub on the banks of Lough Derg. The village location is as typical and idyllic an Irish scene as any you’ll see. Larkin’s, owned by Cormac and Maura Boyle, is over 300 years old and just the sort of country pub you want to find when you come to Ireland. Sadly, not many remain, making this place one of those rare gems serving the must delicious and wholesome grub you will find.

Munster Bar (The)

Bailey's New Street, Waterford City.

Peter and Michael Fitzgeralds traditional and historic pub isn’t that easy to spot straight off as it is located down one of the narrow streets of Waterford city centre’s oldest quarter, but it’s certainly worth seeking out if you want some serious pub grub at lunch or dinner.

Roadside Tavern (The)

Lisdoonvarna, Co Clare.

If ever there was a typical Irish pub, The Roadside Tavern is it! This characterful family-run pub is one of the oldest in the Burren, and has been in the Curtin family for three generations and is now in the hands of Peter and Birgitta Curtin of Burren Smokehouse fame. Peter has a personality larger than life, and his influence is reflected in the atmosphere here, the wonderful traditional Irish music as well as the food on the menu, much of which is made by him at the smokehouse.

Spinnaker Bar (The)

Lower Village, Dunmore East, Co Waterford.

Niall Edmondson has created another winning dining experience. Here he has created a lively Family Friendly Irish pub atmosphere with great food thrown in. As you would expect in a charming fishing village the décor echoes the coastal location, and bits of sailing paraphernalia hang on the walls and this is also reflected in the delicious seafood menu. Live music is a big feature here during the summer months. We love it, and we think you will too.
