It is immediately apparent, when checking in at front desk of Bellinter House, just outside Navan, that this is one stylish refurbishment. Original period features have been lovingly restored and sit comfortably alongside the contemporary art and furniture pieces, which have been thoughtfully collected. Nowhere is this melding of styles more evident than in the vaulted cellar which houses Eden restaurant.
The menu is loosely modelled on that of its sister outfit in Temple Bar but with a little extra attention given to local produce and artisan producers. Regular diners from Eden in Dublin will be pleased to spot the familiar (and wonderful!) cocktail list and lovingly chosen wine menu. From this, we ordered a couple of glasses of the refreshing Aussie Windowrie Verdelho to accompany our starters. It worked just perfectly with the exceptional Prawn Tail, Asparagus and Orzo Gratin, which oozed with creaminess but was saved by some sweet cherry tomatoes and a sharp lemony zing. Almost as good was the Chicken Liver Parfait, served simply with some toast, mixed leaves and an apple and onion chutney. Mains were equally successful. A fantastically succulent piece of Loughshinny Hake was combined in a Roulade with Clonakilty Black Pudding and Smoked Ham and served with some simple boiled potatoes and a chive sauce. The result was simple, fresh and delightful cooking. Our other choice, the Watson Farm Beef Fillet was certainly not for the faint-hearted. It was served with horseradish, spinach, Stilton and roasted garlic mash, perhaps a little overpowering altogether but delicious nonetheless. Desserts, as always at Eden, were a triumph. The local Strawberries with Meringue and Mascarpone were only barely outdone by the Melting Chocolate Pudding and the sumptuous Homemade Pistachio Ice-cream.
For breakfast, it was hard to pass up the divine sounding French toast with mascarpone and mixed berries but we could not resist a bowl of melt-in-the-mouth baked eggs with jalapenos, tomato and melted Wexford Cheddar…stunning!
Rooms range in shape, size and price from the large, lush main house rooms over the drawing room, to those in the wings which are lightly more modest, but no less beautiful. Massage, facials and other treatments are available in the dedicated spa and the outdoor hot-tub promises evenings of decadent mischief!
Bellinter House is a seriously indulgent experience. The little basement restaurant buzzes with a mixture of resident and local voices. Service is delightful and staff are more than happy to take you to the drawing room for coffee or a digestif. There you can sit, among cowhide rugs and Chesterfield couches and dream of never leaving.
