What makes the perfect Country House? Well, this Italianate villa set amid landscaped gardens and mature woodlands with winding paths for peaceful walks, is damn near perfection! A crunchy gravel drive leads to the courtyard and front door of the boyhood home of owner Justin Green and now his wife Jenny, and your arrival will be welcomed by the hosts and the family dogs too! It’s the first taste of what’s to come in this ‘get away from it all’ location with superb accommodation and fabulous food.
The atmosphere is relaxed house party rather than formal hotel experience, with country cooking focusing on seasonal, homegrown vegetables, salads, fruit and herbs from the House’s pretty Walled Garden, to compliment home reared beef and lamb and local pork from McGrath’s Butchers, Lismore, fresh fish from West Cork and sometimes, the day’s catch from the Blackwater River.
When it comes to dinnertime, guests gather all together round the large table in the dining room to share each other’s company and some fine Country House fare. One menu is served each evening, and ours featured divine Fresh Pea and Coriander Soup, a whopping piece of McGrath’s Sirloin Steak, grilled to perfection and served with Béarnaise Sauce, rounded off with delicate Elderflower Panna Cotta, infused with the garden’s own Elderberries, with tender Poached Pears and home made Brown Bread Ice Cream. Follow that with a choice of Irish cheeses from the board, served by Justin, accompanied with homemade crackers and breads, fresh pears, quince jelly, and Vintage Port. Wines are from a comprehensive list, with something to complement every taste.
At breakfast, an antique sideboard groans with fruit, cereals, and North Cork yogurt, enjoyed before a light Continental with home made preserves and House honey, or The Full Monty, complete with eggs from Ballyvolane’s free-range hens. Home made fruit cordials, cookies and tea and coffee making facilities are provided in the sumptuously furnished bedrooms, which have garden views.
We loved Ballyvolane’s understated grandeur, the generous hospitality of the hosts, and the picturesque location, which includes three trout lakes and several beats on the Blackwater.
The Cork Blackwater is Ireland’s finest Salmon River and one of the most important salmon rivers in Europe and Ballyvolane are fortunate to be able to offer some of the best beats on the river offering a wide variety of spring, summer and early autumn fishing. They also have their own lakes in the grounds at Ballyvolane, which are stocked with rainbow trout and can be fished all year round. Ballyvolane offers a fantastic opportunity to learn to fly fish on the renowned river Blackwater with one its most experienced and talented fishing guides. A fully stocked Rod Room with angling equipment for hire is available on site and they run several angling and fly fishing courses throughout the year for every level of angler - visit their website or click here to view Ballyvolane's most recent Newsletter which contains all the wonderful upcoming events, courses available and special offers.

We are delighted to announce that Justin and Jenny have opened a new venture, O’Brien’s Chop House, in the heart of pretty Lismore, which we know will be a huge success story for the Green's and this lovely heritage town.
