You’d expect a department store like Brown Thomas to have a decent restaurant, all that style would have to extend to what’s served up in food terms too, one would suppose. And one would suppose right - Kemp sisters Domini and Peaches of itsa Bagel fame are at the helm, to see to it that gracious living meets elegant dining, at their Table restaurant in the Cork city centre store. You may even find one, other or both the girls dining alongside you, as we did the day we visited.
Cork being the centre of our food-producing universe, it wouldn’t be too much to expect to find some good local produce from fellow Good Food Ireland Members on the menu too – and you won’t be disappointed there either. At breakfast, enjoy a meaty mouthful of Declan O’Flynn’s designer sausages with free-range eggs. Declan Ryan’s famous Arbutus Sourdough features in a gourmet sandwich with Jane Murphy’s Ardsallagh Goat’s Cheese, black olive tapenade and roasted red peppers, for lunch. As does Castletownbere Haddock, smoked and cooked to perfection with a selection of other fresh fish in Executive Chef Mary Morrison Creamy Fish Pie. So you can taste a little of what the region has to offer - a bonus, which sets Table at BT apart from other department stores.
Other regions and more Good Food Ireland members are also represented such as Cashel Blue Cheese. Organic Irish beef is the star of a meaty Beefburger or BT Shepherd’s Pie, whilst Silver’s Hill’s duckling, smoked by McConnell’s, comes in a salad with pickled beetroots and an orange and tarragon dressing. Glin Valley’s free-range chicken takes pride of place in Buttermilk Chicken Goujons, served with seriously good handcut home made fries – and we guarantee you won’t be able to resist having a side order of these with whatever you order.
If you’re only peckish, the Small Starts section includes Gourmet Soup of the Day with homemade brown soda bread, or a Cuppa Soup Combo – a lovely cup of soup served with a mini BLT. And for those arriving between brekkie and lunch, a browse of the Brunch menu reveals treats like wonderfully classic Eggs Benedict, with free range eggs cooked super soft, and topped with creamy hollandaise sauce on a home made muffin. Or try the free range Chicken Ceasar Salad with roast Pumpkin Seeds. Of course, this being a Kemp venture, all the familiar home baked treats are also on offer through the day. Cookies with Chocolate Chips or Orange and Raisins, Dairy Free Apple and Walnut Cake and of course, Toasted homemade Bagels with butter and jam, among others all make an appearance. All this glamorous food is served in an equally glamorous setting. The restaurant perches high in this old building, with large sash windows looking out over the rooftops of Cork city. Muted shades, pale wooden floors and minimal furnishings give a clean, chic look to the place. Clientele is a mix of business lunchers, seasoned shoppers, and young mums with kids in tow – who incidentally are made very welcome here.
The drinks menu includes fresh smoothies and juices, as well as a varied offering of designer coffees and teas, sparkling waters and French Lemonades. It’s also refreshing to find a good choice of wines by glass and bottle. You can even avail of a flute of Prosecco, Kir Royale or a Buck’s Fizz – just what’s needed to revitalise tired pockets and weary feet after a few hours of browsing the shop floor here.
