Café Rua

Castlebar  |  Mayo

Daytime Café

Castlebar is no easy town to negotiate. But overcoming the frustration of its one-way system is worth it when you get to Café Rua. This place is about all the good things Irish food has to offer, dressed up in a bright colourful space with staff who smile, clearly enjoy what they do and know the difference between one end of a carrot and another.

Customers are clearly a focus here and it is not just the warm welcome and enthusiastic service. Blackboards around the room are segmented by use; so paninis on one, lighter meals on another, one for daily specials - which are that - and another for puds.

This approach means you can dine as you like, a Café Rua pâté with cranberry relish and toast perhaps, or mixed leaf salad with Irish cheeses and house chutney or the simple delights of garlic bread with mozzarella.

For anyone keen on more serious eating you might consider a pork chop with apple sauce and thyme; or broccoli, cauliflower and gruyere gratin with pilaf rice. Local producers feature a lot, like Clarke's smoked salmon and fellow Good Food Ireland members Noodle House Papardelle with meatballs, or honey roast bacon salad with Cashel Blue.

Café Rua has buckets of attitude in all the right places and in all the right ways. Every town in Ireland should have one and every main route should have a sign proudly directing travellers to decent food. The good news is the McMahon family have recently opened a second one shortly with a delicatessen attached - hurrah! So be sure to also vist Rua too!

We visited your Cafe over Easter for light lunch and a full lunch on different days and the food was wonderful. The service great and very friendly. We bought some local carrahowlly cheese from the deli. We will keep it on our list of places to eat and tell other people as well.
