Spinnaker Bar (The)

Dunmore East  |  Waterford

This lively pub and restaurant is by the sea in Dunmore East, set just up the hill away from the busy sea front road, it makes a pleasant stroll down to the beach once you’ve had a good lunch, or perhaps before supper. Owner Niall Edmondson took over here in 2005, and has turned it’s reputation around to create a lively Irish pub atmosphere with some great food thrown in.

Décor echoes the coastal location, and bits of sailing paraphernalia hang on the walls. The old flagstone floors, big wooden tables and antique leather banquettes an ‘old world’ charm, as does the large working fireplace in one side of the main bar. What you get here is a place which feels good to be in, be it for a quick lunchtime bit and a refreshing drink, or for a much more relaxed supper. And kids are very welcome indeed. In fact the pub takes part in Failte Ireland’s Family Friendly programme which means there are always high chairs for smallies, baby bowls and spoons, generous changing facilities in both ladies and gents toilets, and even a menu dedicated to the kids. At the Spinnaker, this is called the ‘Young Adults’ menu and includes things like Pasta, good burgers and chicken goujons, all with homemade fries, or your youngsters can happily choose a half portion of whatever is on the main menu.

But getting back to Mum and Dad, Grannie and whoever else comes here, there’s lots to like in grown up food! Being so near to Dunmore East’s working fishing harbour obviously means good fish. Starters feature Steamed Mussels in Light Chilli and Coriander Cream, Tempura of Monkfish, and Pan-fried Crab Claws in Garlic butter. We tried the Golden Breaded Fishcake, and creamy Seafood Chowder packed with salmon, mussels and clams. Mains range from Thai Green Chicken Curry with Basmati Rice to Traditional Beer Battered Fish, (it was gorgeous, pearly flaked cod fillet the day we went) served with homemade fries and mushy peas. Irish beef dishes include the massive 10oz Sirloin with peppered sauce, or a smaller and succulent fillet steak with parsnip and truffle oil puree, very sophisticated indeed. And one very unusual and typically Irish dish that stands out here is the Boiled Ribs, Colcannon and Parsley sauce. Grown men have been known to cry over the purist, simple way this is cooked, bringing childhood memories flooding back!

When it comes to dessert, the secret of the Spinnaker Bar’s kitchen is a lady called Irene who makes everything in house - and has her own special section on the menu. Her Chocolate Brownies, Fresh Fruit Pavlova, Banoffie Pie or Cheesecake of the week are just some of the wonderful offerings she uses to tempt the customers. Enjoy a little bit of what you fancy with a good Java Republic coffee, traditional Liquer coffee, or a pot of herbal, green or Irish tea. And of course there is a full bar service with wine too. Needless to say the Spinnaker is packed during the summer with visiting tourists, and many spill out into the large beer garden with its own bar out the back. Live music is a big feature at the Blue Grass Festival and attracts heaps of music lovers. In the winter, things are a little quieter, allowing diners to sit for longer and enjoy the charm of this lovely seaside pub, which takes a different, more mellow personality in the off season months. We love it, and we think you will too.
