Peter and Anne O’Brien have completely revamped this little restaurant since they took ownership over five years ago, to create a fish lover’s paradise in pretty Bantry Bay, with décor inspired by its location and nautical pursuits. Walls hang with seascapes and the ceiling lamps resemble the twinkling lights of Bantry’s small fishing fleet. The window features three stunning model sailboats, and makes the place hard to miss from the street.
Great fresh seafood is at the heart of the produce of this region and features hugely at O’Connor’s. Bantry’s fishermen supply prawns, lobster, and crab. Mussels and oysters come from beds in the Bay and the boats of Castletownbere land the Atlantic’s freshest fish. Don’t miss the opportunity to enjoy a delicious open sandwich of Fresh Local Crab and Mayo, Ummera Smoked Salmon, or tuck into a filling O’Connor’s Seafood Pie topped with mashed potatoes and Durras Cheese.
If they are on the menu, we’d highly recommend the generously sized Bantry Bay Prawns, peeled and served with leafy salad from the Bantry House walled garden and home made Marie Rose sauce, followed by golden Fish Cakes with Spicy Chilli Dip. Daytime trade is brisk, and the place is very lively indeed on Friday’s, market day in the town. Evenings have a more intimate feel, and the choice includes starters of Fresh Local Oysters or Lobster from O’Connor’s seawater tank, or another House favourite, Bantry Bay Mussels in Murphy’s Stout, which also come as a main. Beara Scallop and Pancetta Salad or Salt and Fennel encrusted Sea Bass with Roast Cherry Tomatoes are popular dinner specials. Meat eaters can dine on locally reared duck and lamb, and traditional well-hung Irish Fillet or Sirloin Steak.
The well-priced wine list features classic Muscadet Sur Lie for shellfish, southern French Rose for prawns, crab and salmon, and a good smattering of reds too. The Early Bird dinner menu is also great value.
