Ghan House and Cookery School

Paul Carroll's eighteenth century Georgian house is nestled at the foot of Slieve Foy. This is a seriously character filled place, and an open fireplace create an atmosphere of warmth and comfort, which permeates the house. The 12 ensuite with mountain-view bedrooms, are furnished with family antiques and filled with fresh flowers and old-fashioned attention to detail. Dining is a real treat in the classic surroundings not to mention the wonderful Cookery School all housed within these walled grounds.

This fabulous spot, owned by Jean Perry and her husband, and situated just outside the village of Baltimore looking out over the inlet to the ocean, is picturesque in every way. The old house, bought by the family in the late 80’s, has been renovated to its former glory. Five acres of gardens provide a mix of scenery, which takes in the bigger picture of its coastal location. This fabulous Artisan Food & Wine Shop is the brainchild of husband and wife team Mary and Eamonn Gleeson of Gleeson's Townhouse & Restaurant. They obviously did their homework here as you would never suspect that it is only a recent addition to the Roscommon shopping scene as its selves are stocked with carefully chosen products, a fine selection of wines and freshly baked scones and soda breads in abundance.

Each product is carefully handmade from the milk of their own herd and of neighbouring farms producing Glenilen’s wonderfully creamy milk, which is the basis for the superlative dairy products such as delicious, light as a feather cheesecakes, fromage frais, pro-biotic natural yoghurt, rich clotted and double cream and the best ever country butter.

Goatsbridge Trout Farm

Mags and Ger Kirwan are the custodians of a terrific heritage. Their Goatsbridge Trout Farm is located on the River Little Arrigle, which has been fished intermittently since the twelfth century! Today, their premium product is on the menus in many of the greatest Irish restaurants and their hot smoked trout is among the favourite staples on Irish dinner tables. We visit this passionate duo at the farm outside Thomastown in Kilkenny and are enthralled by their knowledge, enthusiasm and connection to the land on which they live and work. The Kirwans are fiercely passionate and determined operators, they know the value of the provenance of their product and are fully immersed in the history and hard work that is their heritage and that is why there are members of Good Food Ireland.
