The 10th Volvo Ocean Race set sail from Alicante, Spain on Saturday 11th of October 2008. This 37,000 mile round the world yacht race will take over 9 months for the eight daring teams taking part. The Irish are well represented this year with the Green Dragon Team, the main Irish contender with Wexfordman Justin Slattery and the Delta Lloyd Team, led by Irish skipper Ger O’Rourke.
The teams are currently on route to Cape Town on the first 6500 miles leg of the race and what better way to set of on this epic adventure than the wonderful send off the Good Food Ireland network gave the teams and the international media at the Good Food Ireland Showcase Dinner.
Good Food Ireland was invited by Tourism Ireland to present a Good Food Ireland Showcase for International Media at the start of the Volvo Ocean Race in Alicante Spain on Thursday October 9th 2008. Guests were treated to buffet dinner showcasing the best of local Irish produce from different operators including chefs, farmers, fishermen and bread makers from the island of Ireland. Champion of artisan producers Peter Ward of Country Choice in Nenagh, Co Tipperary, Chef Maurice Keller of Arlington Lodge Country House Hotel in Waterford and Master Smoked Salmon Smoker Birgitta Curtin from the Burren Smokehouse in Co Clare were all be in attendance.
Good Food Ireland were one of few nations to provide some national hospitality over the entire 10 day event in Alicante and we will be following the team round the world with the good Food Ireland Showcase to Capetown, Kochi, Boston, and Galway before the race concludes in St Petersburg, Russia, during late June 2009.
