Teaching’s loss is definitely the hospitality trade’s gain. When Eamonn and Mary Gleeson gave up the day jobs to run a B&B and coffee shop in Roscommon town, it was a brave decision that has reaped wonderful rewards. A nineteenth century home in fairly bad condition was a challenging task to take on, but 15 years later, it’s well known far and wide. Expansion has seen a restaurant and new kitchens at the back and 19 ensuite bedrooms upstairs. The original coffee shop – it still has the old floorboards and stonewalls - is thriving with seating outdoors for when the weather is kind enough. Open from 8am for breakfast, the menu includes a delicious range of homemade scones, cakes and breads. At lunchtime, there are daily specials on the blackboard or you can choose from the menu. This has seafood chowder with house breads, homemade beef and Guinness pie, Leitrim Organic Farmers Beefburger served with Mossfield garlic herb cheese (also on the Manse Restaurant menu), lasagne and Irish Stew.
Dinner is served in the Manse Restaurant, with quality meals coming from the kitchens. Seafood and local meats play a strong role. The chowder has to be recommended, a bowl of creamy soup packed with mussels, and shrimps and served with fresh bread. Follow this with Roscommon rack of lamb cooked with an apricot and pine nut crust or the sole stuffed with crabmeat and smoked salmon, coated with a warm lemongrass and coriander vinaigrette. Desserts have a French influence with a wonderful Apple Tarte Tatin (upside down apple tart) with Irish Whiskey Crème Anglaise. Or there’s a lemon and lime crème Brulée with an Almond Tuille Biscuit.
These delicacies have been introduced by chef Marc Magerand, who is of French origin with over 40 years experience in the business. Marc commenced his training in 1967 as an apprentice pastry chef. During the course of the next 20 years, Marc progressed to work on cruise ships and oilrigs on the North Sea and has worked in various countries around the globe such as Spain, Switzerland, Luxemburg, Argentina, Corsica and the Jersey Islands, attaining vast knowledge and expertise in the culinary art of pastry making. He joined the Gleeson’s Team in 1997 introducing speciality breads and pastries to the menu, enhancing the selection of desserts and pastries.
Breakfast is served here as well – until 11.45 so there’s no rush. Marc comes in early to bake the soda breads, scones and muffins as well as delicious brioche. The buffet table has a range of cereals, hot porridge with cream and honey and fresh juices and local preserves that Mary buys in the adjacent weekly Farmers Market. Cooked breakfasts include the full Irish, or perhaps a toasted bagel with bacon, mushroom and scrambled egg or with goats cheese and onion marmalade.
Bedrooms are comfortable and cosy. There is one junior suite and an executive suite with separate sitting room and a Jacuzzi bath. Both suites have views over the pretty square outside. The bedrooms have Internet connection.
Not content with having a guesthouse, coffee shop and restaurant to keep them occupied, Eamonn and Mary also opened a fabulous gourmet foodhall and deli - Gleeson's Artisan Food & Wine Shop.
