Ditty’s Home Bakery & Coffee Shop Magherafelt

Magherafelt  |  Derry

French doors opening out onto the street is a very innovative idea. But not when it comes from the creative brain of baker Robert Ditty. It might be a bit too busy and noisy to sit on the pavement at the roundabout in the middle of town, but you can sit at the edge of the café, not quite outside and not quite outside. Behind you is the busy café counter, where customers line up to buy and eat some of the delicious products. In front of you is the passing parade for your perusal while you sip a latte and bite into a vanilla slice or an apple turnover. And it’s as if there’s a magnet outside pulling customers in, as it’s obvious that many find it quite impossible to pass by. If you’re unlucky and these tables are full, don't worry, as there are plenty of tables at the back of this buzzing coffee shop.

With Robert’s wife Helen running this popular eatery, it’s very clear that the emphasis is on home cooking and baking. The Ditty breakfast fry and the vegetarian fry include both potato bread and fried soda bread. Or enjoy the cook’s special – homemade pancakes with fresh seasonal berries and maple syrup. Lunchtime specials include two freshly made soups, traditional bacon and cabbage with mustard sauce and creamy mashed potatoes, the popular burger with fried onions, savoury tarts and pies. Regular fare includes Irish stew, quiches, lasagne and a selection of sandwiches and rolls.

As Ditty’s bakery is well known in the area, it’s not surprising that the variety of cakes and buns is delectable; Eccles cakes, muffins, cream pastries, meringues, iced buns, vanilla slices, apple tart, and doughnuts – the list is practically endless. Birthday and other special occasion cakes are made to order.
