Deirdre McCafferty’s Cornucopia, on Dublin's Wicklow Street, has been a central part of the fabric of the city for over twenty years and walking into the buzzing little café, it's easy to see why. The entrance walls are adorned with posters advertising everything from yoga to macrobiotic cookery classes and the wooden tables and chairs inside make the decor simple and unfussy. Specialising in vegan, vegetarian and wholefood, it also pays special attention to those with food allergies or intolerances and all ingredients are listed. Menus rotate seasonally and are written to revolve around local, organically grown vegetables and farmhouse cheeses such as Cashel Blue and Gubbeen.
We opted for the fantastic 'Spanokopita' and were not disappointed; garlicky spinach and creamy feta cheese, encased in melting layers of filo pastry served with their, justifiably famous, hazelnut and potato and mixed bean salads...scrumptious! Thier sprouted bean salad with giner and corriander or more exotic carrot, daikon and sesame seed salad in a Japanese-style dressing are just the thing to give your body a boost - these are just two of their famous recipes to be found in their new cookbook Cornucopia at Home.
Also not to be missed is the legendary two cheese Cannelloni with sage cream. Listen to fascinating conversations at neighbouring tables while sipping barley coffee and chomping on rich and unctuous chocolate, nut brownie. To start the day, homemade baked beans and veggie sausages are just part of the hearty breakfast, served every day before twelve. For the virtuous and the indulgent alike, this little gem reflects the dedication of its staff and proprietor to health, fun and a great food ethos.
