Take a short stroll down through the grounds and gardens at Culloden and in moments you will come across the Cultra Inn. This is Culloden’s Brassiere style restaurant, open to residents and the public, suitable for casual dining occasions. Very welcoming too, for families with children. The Cultra has an open plan space, separated into sections to make each part cosier. A welcoming fire in the bar area is a pleasure to sit by. The bar is fully stocked, with a range of spirits including some great Irish Whiskeys – and a good cocktail list if you feel like indulging. You can have tea or coffee here too, and just sit and read a book or the papers.
In food terms the sourcing ethos of local produce is continued here. Chef Mark Mahon has his own ideas on how to cook and present it. Dishes are simple and make use of all that lovely meat in a good way.
The Cultra Signature Lentil and Bacon Soup is a hearty bowlful with Fivemiletown Cheese and Onion Scone on the side. Or try the Cultra Ceasar Salad with roast Irish chicken, crispy bacon, baby gem lettuce and crisp croutons bound in the creamy Ceasar dressing and topped with fresh Parmesan shavings. There’s always a pie of the day for the main course – turkey and ham, steak and Guinness and of course, on Friday’s a chunky Fisherman’s Pie topped with fluffy mash. We enjoyed the Fish and Chips – chips are seriously good – fine and thick hand cut specimens which come in perched in a dinky chip basket, while the fish of the day – haddock in our case – was coated in golden crisp batter. A small kilner jar of pea puree finished the plate and it was jolly delicious, we can tell you! We recommend also the Dexter Dry Aged Sirloin – a meaty 10oz steak cut from meat which is dry aged on the bone for 21 days. Have this cooked to preference, and enjoy it with the slow cooked confit of Garlic Bulb – which takes on a mellow savoury character when you cook it like this. This menu also features Organic Glenarm Shorthorn Beef Fillet. Shorthorn beef has good natural marbling – very important especially for fillet which is a prime cut that doesn’t have a coat of fat on the outside.
On this menu there are heaps of light bites too – filled Paninis and Sandwiches to please the beat the best of them! Kids are well looked after with their own menu of little pizzas, pasta and prime Irish meatballs in tomato sauce. They won’t complain! The restaurant is open for Lunch and Dinner daily, with the light bites menu served daily from noon till 5pm. It’s very popular here on Sundays too for the well-priced Sunday Buffet Lunch.
