When you check in at the five star Killarney Park Hotel, you will feel as if you’ve been given the keys to the Kingdom of Kerry. You’ve arrived. The concierge will park your car, your bags will be swept away from you and into your room as if by magic, and stresses and strains of a busy life will gradually melt away. This place takes you to another level.
The Killarney Park is owned by Padraig Treacy, who comes from a long established hotelier family in Killarney. He has owned this particular hotel since 1992, and has made it one of the leading hotels in the country in that time. It has everything – grace, elegance, charm - with total comfort as its ultimate top notch offering. A stay here is a very pleasant one indeed. And the location couldn’t be better. The Killarney Park is the gateway to a wealth of local activities – golf courses, walking trails, heritage and historical tours, majestic scenery in its National Park with stunning lakes, and of course a playground of shopping and galleries in short walking distance from the front door. It’s a luxurious base which makes for a very active few days away. And we haven’t even started telling you just how luxurious it is.
The Killarney Park – or KP as it’s known locally – is a modern building made truly time honoured in service and style. The front door is tucked away off the street in its own grounds and drive. Greenery and manicured lawns separate you from the busy world of traffic and people. Step in here and you step into peace and quiet – but always with the option of joining the action outside if you must. An elegant reception desk and open plan lounges always have welcoming roaring fires in the grates. Staff are purely and simply professional. Nothing is too much trouble. All you need do is ask. A range of accommodation here includes Deluxe rooms, Junior Suites and Superior Suites. Deluxe rooms have a choice of bed arrangements, with twin, family or double rooms and interconnecting rooms too. Warm textures and richly coloured upholstery is used to dramatic effect, lending the elegant touch to interiors. Suites are another story again. Our Junior Suite had a very modern look, with small entrance lobby, leading into a roomy bedroom area complete with tv that rose up out of the cabinet at the foot of the bed, at the touch of a button. A glass wall separated the bed from the sitting area with its log fire and flat screen, table seating and work station, leading onto a small outside terrace beyond. The bathroom was complete decadence in its spaciousness, and with flat screen tv by the large deep bath, so you can lie back and catch the news or your favourite programme as you soak. Superior suites have private entrance hall, working fireplaces, graceful lounge area, large bedrooms, marbled bathrooms and work stations. All have unique features too – it could be a private steam shower or a small built in kitchenette. All rooms at the Killarney Park have courtesy bathrobes, slippers and toiletries to add a touch of home from home.
The Park Restaurant is the Killarney Park’s flagship fine dining room. It’s a really beautiful high-ceilinged room with its own log fire to add that touch of warm Irish hospitality. Linen tablecloths, gleaming glassware, silver cutlery and soft music provide the perfect platform to enjoy a gourmet meal here. The wine cellar just off the restaurant is open to the room and the wine waiter is always delighted to let you have a look at the prestigious selection on offer. Menu wise, it’s a veritable array of local and Irish produce. Chef Odran Lucey takes pride in using as much local as possible and making sure it’s highlighted on his dinner menu. We started with six Coonana Oysters – served in Bloody Mary shots and just breathtaking in their freshness and taste. You can have them natural too, served on a big platter of ice in the half shell, with muslin wrapped lemon and a complimenting half a Guinness on the side. Being in fishy mode after that, we chose the Dover Sole Meuniere with its delicious brown shrimp and butter sauce. It comes either on the bone, or expertly boned out if you prefer. There’s lots of fish here – fresh hake and monkfish also feature in different treatments. Meats are also strong in representation – especially local hill lamb and beef from the rich pastures of Kerry. The local butcher’s fillet steak is served with Braised Oxtail, Horseradish Potato Galette and an intensely flavoured red wine jus. Loin of Kerry lamb has a savoury wrapping of pancetta and has lamb’s liver on the side, and the Mediterranean theme continues with garlic confit, cherry tomatoes and spinach as accompaniments. West Cork duck is roasted with Szechuan Pepper, potato confit and poached figs. After the main, you can dive into the indulgence of dessert and we don’t think you’ll be able to choose so easily! We loved the Assiette of Irish Liqueurs – a Bailey’s Crème Brulee, Hot Toddy Sorbet, Irish Mist Parfait and Hennessy’s Brandy Baba. Naturally, you’d expect a selection of Irish Farmhouse cheeses to be on offer here too. And it is, served elegantly with water biscuits and homemade chutney. Taste the cheeses of Ireland on this plate and see just how well we compete with other countries!
In Garden Bar, a full bar, plus teas and coffees and bar snacks are available throughout the day. Start with a glass of Prosecco as you browse the menu – easy going brasserie style food like Dingle Bay Seafood Chowder or a Steamed Crock of Mussels, two salads like Ceasar or the Killarney Park House Salad. Substantial meat mains include the Killarney Park Grill of local beef sirloin or fillet and rack of lamb with fries, grilled mushrooms and tomatoes. You can grab a gourmet sandwich too and naturally, there will be a fine list of desserts if you fancy cake and tea! The Garden Bar also serves a fine range of Whiskeys plus cocktails and wine.
Afternoon Tea is making a comeback in Ireland – and served very traditionally here at the Killarney Park. Take tea in the Drawing Room with its grand drapes, marble fireplace and comfortable chairs and sofas. This room has a peaceful and private location which enjoys a sunny aspect in the afternoon and early evening. Sit down, relax and be presented with a tiered stand of finger sandwiches and homemade pastries, silver tea pot, milk jug and sugar bowl, crisp napkins and all the trimmings. Other rooms for residents include a games room with billiard table and chess boards, and the library with a big collection of reading material taking in travel, culture and Irish history and heritage. If you feel a little more energetic, take a swim in the Killarney Park Spa pool, grab some tranquillity and serenity with a treatment, or do a bit of a work out in the fully equipped fitness room.
Overnight guests will wake in the morning to a wonderful breakfast choice. You can take breakfast in your room if you wish – but we wouldn’t have missed the chance to browse the buffet area with its cereals, porridge, pastries and breads, fresh fruits, fruit compotes and natural yogurt. Flavoured honeys and homemade preserves are the creation of the Chef and his team. The full Irish bolsters the spirits and the energy levels for a busy day ahead. Lighter options are there if you choose. Tea and coffee flow effortlessly with just a nod to the waitress for more. You could spend a while here so leave plenty of time to enjoy it!
Luxury comes as standard at the Killarney Park, from the moment you walk in the door as we said earlier, throughout your stay, to the time when you have to check out. You won’t want to leave, we are certain of that – and it’s guaranteed you will want to come back.
