As you walk through Dublin’s Financial Services Centre, by Custom House Quay, the eyes are immediately drawn to the throngs of happy diners and drinkers sitting outside, on a pavement terrace. They are the happy post and no work folk who are the customers at Ely CHQ. Whatever the occasion, or with none at all, this is the perfect venue for listening to the hubbub of activity, as deals are made and broken.
Like all the Ely venues, wine is at the centre of the offering and here, you can walk the cellars of, what was once the warehouse of Dublin’s Custom and Excise department, and view some rare and wonderful wines. The space is vast and contemporary with funky beats emanating from the well placed speakers. As with the other Ely's, all pork, beef and lamb is either from Robson's organic farm in Carron, Co Clare or from Craggy Farm or Danny Coogan in Trim, Co Meath.
On our recent visit, we started with seared line-caught tuna (Eric is passionate about sustainable seafood) served with baby fennel, black olive tapenade and preserved lemon and matched perfectly with a crisp Alsace Riesling. Afterwards, it was hard to pass on the haddock special with gnocchi, pesto tossed cherry tomatoes and homemade won tons filled with scallops, prawn and cod…devine! Alternatively, the stunning organic beef sirloin arrives with watercress, snow peas and made all the more perfect by the addition of a bottle of punchy Amarone! Dessert is a fresh and light strawberry parfait with cubes of homemade jelly, blackberries and raspberries...fantastic.
Staff and service, as with everything at Ely, are well considered and attentive. During the theatre festival, this is the perfect spot for a pre or post show bite. During fine summer months, the terraces are teeming with people, many drinking wines from boutique wineries that they would rarely get to try by the glass. Get there early and nab the best seat!
