Run by Phil and Ted Murphy and daughter Sandra, this pub has a long history of serving the local community. It’s gastro reputation is rising as high as the tide itself! Local produce forms the basis of a comprehensive menu of bar food and snacks, as well as the substantial lunch and dinner menus on offer each night. The first thing to do on arrival, is grab a drink from the bar – it could a warming cup of tea or freshly made coffee, a glass of wine, a shot of a favourite tipple, or a beer or pint of creamy stout. Then grab a seat in the open lounge area, where windows look out directly over the outside lawn and garden tables to the water beyond. You can choose a high stool in the casual bar area, to make the most of the views. Or opt for comfy banquette seating at the tables nearby. For more formal dining at lunch or evening, the rear restaurant area is newly decorated and spacious. When you’ve made up your mind where you’re sitting, ask for the menu. It might take you a while to decide what to eat – the choice is extensive.
The Brasserie Lunch Menu always features a vegetable based soup of the day with homemade breads – which could be an old fashioned brown soda or something more adventurous with the addition of pesto or sundried tomatoes. Fresh Poached Salmon, Cod and Haddock Chowder is also worth a shot – lovely chunks of fish in a creamy broth. Rising Tide’s Herb Crumb Fishcakes are a mix of fresh fish, lemony potato and crisp herb crumb coating. For mains, choose a plate of Fresh Atlantic Scampi with organic salad and chips, a home made gourmet beef burger with carameilised onions and mozzarella, or the famous Rising Tide Fish and Chips. The latter is very popular, and hand cut chips are served in a mini newspaper cone. Lighter offerings include Toasted Doorstep Sandwiches or a cold Seafood Platter with smoked salmon, tuna and prawns in marie rose sauce. The board always has specials too – in our case the starters featured Jack McCarthy’s Boar’s head pudding with Smoked Salmon Roulade stuffed with cream cheese. To follow, the wonderfully moist steamed Cod with Pesto, sundried tomatoes and sprightly rocket leaves was vibrant in taste and colour.
In the evening, things move up a notch. A very good value Early Bird menu is served for eager diners. The A la Carte which changes with the seasons, could include Flash Fried fresh Calamari with Spicy Tomato sauce, or Shredded Skeaghanore Duck Salad – the duck comes from a small family farm in West Cork – served with chickpeas and rustic potatoes. Local mussels are house speciality – enjoy them in as classic Mariniere with lots of juice for dunking that bread, oven baked on the half shell with garlic and herb crumbs, or with a creamy sauce of Cork based Murphy’s Stout. The seawater tank holds local oysters and sometimes lobsters too. Oysters are served as they come, or baked with stout and walnuts or garlic and herbs. Choose three, six, nine or the whole platter of twelve – we guarantee you won’t be disappointed. Lamb and Beef from Cork butchers are given the chef’s treatment at dinner time, and for vegetarians, big fleshy Portabello Mushrooms are topped with East Cork’s Ardsallagh Goat’s Cheese and served with home made pesto. The separate pastry kitchen here ensures a fine selection of homemade desserts – too numerous to mention but all absolutely delicious and tempting!
Become a fan of The Rising Tide Restaurant & Bar
I was down in Cork last week with my family. And we always try and find Goodfood Ireland menbers. So we saw that the Rising Tide had become a member and I have heard so many good things about this place. So we had to try it. Me and my wife had the Crosshaven mussels in a thai curry sauce and my son had the wild boar black pudding with cider apple. This brilliant combination of starter was the best we have had anywhere in cork. For mains we tried out the specials board, I had the black sole with rocket and goats cheese, my wife had the Jack McCarthy free range pork rack with sun dry tomato mash. My son went for ring of kerry rack of lamb. We have been in so many great restaurants all over Ireland which are Goodfood Ireland members. But the rising tide is up there with the best
