Ballycotton Seafood

Midelton  |  Cork

Ballycotton Seafood Ltd. Is one of Ireland’s leading fish processing company’s It was established over twenty years ago recognising the quality of the fresh fish being landed at Ballycotton pier by the local boats.

Ballycotton Seafood is an amazing industry built around fresh fish caught primarily by the local fishing fleet off the south coast of Ireland. Richard Walsh started the company over 20 years ago based on fish landed on Ballycotton pier. Controlling your own fishing fleet guarantees supply and quality fresh fish, he once said. From retail to wholesale to export, Ballycotton Seafood prides itself on a full range of fresh fish all prepared, packed and despatched from their processing plant at Garryvoe, from where it is exported throughout Europe and retailed and wholesaled at home and through the English Market and the shop in Midleton.

I visited the English Market off Patrick Street in Cork city, and the counter at Ballycotton Seafood was alive. Fresh fish beautifully displayed with helpful staff under the watchful eye of Alan Wiggins. It was a joy to watch the interaction between customer and the Ballycotton team, and Alan gave me a quick run down on all the fish available and how the market worked.

A few miles to the east is the market town of Midleton where Ballycotton Seafood have a retail shop. The traditional shop front leads you into a magnificent seafood display counter displaying a range of fresh, whole and prepared fish, shellfish, prawns, scallops and fresh squid, the real test was trying to figure out what was missing! Fresh lobsters, crabs and oysters in tanks and along the walls refrigerated display cabinets with freshly prepared precooked seafood dishes. The seafood pie looked so inviting, “bring it home and pop it in the oven for 20 minutes”, Barry said, grab a fork and go for it!

It is very evident here that a lot of thought has gone into what the consumer is looking for in this fast moving world we live in. Salads with fresh crabmeat, seafood pies and a selection of sauces to complement any dish were all available to hand. Barry Fitzgerald, marketing manager, explained the ethos and mission of Ballycotton Seafood, fresh and local were the words I remember the most.

From the English Market to the retail shop in Midleton and the hub of it all in Garryvoe, Diane Walsh and Adrian, directors and owners, continue the family traditions and are looking forward to a vibrant future on the home market as well as growing the export business already in Spain, France and the UK. As an island nation we should be proud of our indigenous companies like Ballycotton Seafood who produce quality fish products and fly the flag of quality throughout Europe and beyond.
