Originally established as a producer of fine chocolate catering to restaurants and hotels, artisan Chocolatier (and GFI member) Deirdre McCanny has recently expanded her business by opening a chocolate boutique right in the heart of Belfast. Now anyone and everyone can enjoy her superb handcrafted chocolates at Co Couture. Using only the finest ingredients, including a combination of French Valrhona and Italian Amedei chocolate as well as local dairy produce, Kerrymaid cream and Ballyrashane creamery butter, Deirdre combines her dedication and skill to produce truly delicious and unique chocolates.
Made fresh daily to meet the high demands of her keen customers, there’s chocolate in all shapes and sizes to tempt even the coy of confection, and best of all her chocs are all gluten free with some dairy free as well. Her Coconut Bonbons and Irish Whiskey Truffles are mouth meltingly good, and if you want to know what proper dark chocolate should taste like, Deirdre’s generous selection will convert your palate. Sample her House Dark, Dark Chocolate Praline or Co Couture’s best-seller, Dark Chocolate Caramel, and you’ll be won over by the flavour – strong on silky chocolate taste without any of the bitterness. Always keen for a chocolate challenge and a new way to entice her loyal customers, Deirdre has also introduced two new flavours: Rose and Orange, both singularly memorable for their harmonious marriage to chocolate. Her creativity really shines through with her Chocolate Covered Popcorn, made more intriguing with its surprise centre. Without ruining the fun, suffice it to say that your taste buds will be tingling and you’ll be running back for more.
Tucked away on Chichester Street, close to Belfast’s City Hall, entering Co Couture is like opening one of its beautifully packaged miniature gift boxes. Situated at basement level of a graded building, its bright, modern interior – bijou in proportion – draws you in to its warm, cosy space and the chocolate counter at the heart of the store. Chocolate is not only the enticement in Co Couture, but the sole décor. If you are tempted to linger, you can order the store’s signature hot chocolate and sit at the only café table in the corner while you contemplate which goodies to take home. You might even catch a quick word with the busy artisan herself. Her business philosophy is simple and the driving force behind her success: it’s all about the customer. She makes a conscious effort to provide for all her customers, including those with dietary restrictions, and she enjoys sharing her passion with them by hosting chocolate tastings and workshops at Co Couture, which she advertises on the store’s website.
Combining her expert knowledge of chocolate with her customer dedication, it’s easy to see that Deirdre has found the recipe for success. Word of her winning formula has travelled fast too. She is one of a select group of 80 producers hand-picked from around the world to be featured in Sarah Jane Evan’s Chocolate Unwrapped (published October 2010), which tells the history of chocolate up to its modern production. A high accolade for a worthy artisan, Deirdre McCanny’s chocolate is perfection in confection, and Co Couture is definitely worth a visit.
