Chocolate Garden of Ireland (The) and Tipperary Organic Ice Cream

Tullow  |  Carlow

Chocolate Shop, Cafe & Ice Cream Parlour

The Chocolate Garden is a chocoholic’s paradise! This production in Co Carlow makes handmade chocolate in a variety of flavours and sells them all downstairs in the lovely coffee shop. Jim Healy has been a Good Food Ireland member for quite some time but this particular outlet is reasonably new and provides the perfect show case for his chocolate making skills.

The Chocolate Garden brand was established in 2005, following a very humble start. Husband and wife team Jim and Mary Healy began simply in 2001– by making a chocolate spread under their previous company’s name – the Wicklow Fine Foods brand. This went down very well indeed so a couple of years later they began making chocolates, investing in some very unusual chocolate moulds to develop their unique range and the rest as they say is history.

Nowadays the company sells really beautifully made chocolates with a feast of fillings and in the most delightful shapes and sizes. Their fresh cream range comes in Jim’s favourite Banoffee, an almond shape coated in pure white chocolate, dark cherry Crème, smooth and sensuous dome of dark chocolate, dark Amaretto, dark and sultry and shaped like a basket of grapes along with lots of others. Or find the perfectly square Chocolate Caramel, gorgeous Irish whiskey truffles flavoured with Kilbeggan whiskey from Westmeath, Champagne truffles and Mint Crèmes. There are way too many fillings and shapes to mention here – the best way to learn about them all is to get a box and eat them! Or better still, come here and enjoy them first hand at their delightful new chocolate and coffee shop, just like we did.

It’s a comfy modern space perfect for passing an hour or so in the company of some very tempting treats. If you thought you had willpower, you’ll soon find you haven’t any at all! Individual chocolates are on display in the chill cabinet so you can choose a selection to enjoy with some very good coffee from Fixx or a cup of Cork’s favourite Barry’s tea. Also in the chill cabinet are lots of tempting gateaux and cakes made by the pastry chef here. Customers can enjoy making and decorating their own chocolate product mould, outside workshop times, while enjoying a complimentry hot chocolate. This shop reminds us of a chocolate boutique you might find in the heart of Paris or Barcelona - it’s that good!

Shelves are lined with a variety of chocolate creations all handmade upstairs. Chocolate Footballs, teddies, lollipops, rabbits, Santa’s and eggs are all here depending on the season of course. You’ll find chocolate hampers too if you want to present someone with a lovely gift. We know you will stare in awe at the display of chocolate celebration cakes - wondrous creations of white chocolate, covered in hand made flowers and chocolate curls or mysterious dark chocolate indulgences trailing with hand made bows and ribbons. The craft work here is astonishing all handmade by Jim and his dedicated team of chocolatiers and we can guarantee you won’t go away empty handed, something on those shelves will persuade you to part with money!

The company also makes Tipperary Organic Ice Creams with organic milk from a local dairy and best quality flavourings. The café sells these by the scoop with a choice of cones - proper Italian cones, either plain waffle, chocolate dipped or chocolate coated ones. If it’s sunny there’s an outside seating area is the place to enjoy one on the lawned garden. The Chocolate Garden is one of Ireland’s nicest places to spend time. The staff are very happy people. And we guarantee you will be too!
