Traditional Pub, Restaurant and Artisan Wine Shop

Back in the mid 1800’s, when this pub first opened, Hargadons was a well-loved, local pub that with one truly unique quality. Despite the prevalence of music bars and the myriad traditional musicians in the country, Hargadons remained a ‘quiet’ bar, devoid of music and dedicated to its position as a genuine sanctuary. This policy remained in situ until fairly recent times and despite it being relaxed in the last years, it remains free of television and devoted to conversation, story telling and of course good food.

The pub has been at the heart of Sligo life for over one hundred and fifty years and despite being closed for some of them, has recently returned to its rightful place, close to the heart of Sligo folk and visitors. Physically, the 1850’s building is stunning. It has been restored to its former glory in a fantastic restoration project, which has been so successful as to render it impossible to tell the restoration work from the renovation. The bar used to bottle its own whiskey and beer and some of the casks are still in evidence, spread throughout the bar. And what a bar it is. The snugs, alcoves and hide-aways are endless. There are fires roaring at every turn and little rooms with old wooden chairs and benches. Some of the austerity of latter-day living has been softened with cushions, throws, banquettes and soft furnishings but somehow, nothing of the authentic original bar has been lost. There are still old grocery shelves in evidence and the attention to detail is quite staggering.

Now what of the food? Since taking over at Hargadons two years ago, Ray Monahan, Joe Grogan and Joe’s wife, Grainne have made serious waves. Already known to Sligo dwellers from their well-regarded Waterfront restaurant at Rosse’s Point, Gráinne and her team have been gradually evolving a menu befitting their environs. The menu is fantastic…in keeping with the Good Food Ireland philosophy, a real homage to their surrounding producers. We start with a stunning, rich and meaty pate of chicken livers, served with a dollop of Gráinne’s own red onion marmalade and dense sourdough toast. Afterwards, some baked crab from John Flynn in Lough Gill is served inside a perfectly ripe avocado…luscious! We tried a bowl of steaming mussels fresh from Lissadell and a trio of oysters from Charlie Kelly.  With duck from fellow Good Food Ireland Members Silver Hill and cheese from Dromahair and finished with a velvety chocolate mousse, all the time remembering that we were eating an unbelievable lunch from within sixty miles of where we sat! Service was warm and friendly and delivered by cheerful Sligo folk, happy to chat about the town and its inhabitants and the entire experience is one of warmth and hospitality, the pub eager to envelop you in its cosy rooms.

Hargadons is a perfect pit stop in Sligo. Lunch is as buzzing as dinner, where they serve a more elaborate but still local and seasonal menu. Why not pop in for a local sirloin sandwich with some of Gráinne’s homemade chips and a wonderful pint of Guinness, served with a smile, a chat and a tad of local gossip?!
