Ireland’s west coast is one of the most stunning places in the world. The Connemara Coast Hotel, part of the Sinnott hotel group has an enviable location in one the most beautiful parts of this part of Ireland. Just a short drive from the centre of Galway city, this lovely hotel lies right on the Connemara coast hence the name and occupies a prime sea front spot with views to die for. To the rear of the hotel the craggy coastline on the bay is visible from many of the rooms, the dining areas, the hotel’s terraces and lawned gardens. There are winding footpaths from the lawns to the water’s edge, take a stroll down there while you’re visiting, you might spot a seal or a dolphin. You’ll see the coastline of Clare opposite unless the mist really is down and you can even see the Aran Islands out to sea in the distance. It really is an idyllic get away from it all location, and once you enter the hotel you probably won’t feel the need to leave for a long time.
Accommodation here varies through standard rooms, executive bedrooms, junior and senior suites and a magnificent Presidential Suite with its own sitting room and dining area, separate extravagantly furnished bedroom, mini kitchen, large bathroom with corner bath and double sinks and a wrap around balcony with terrace table and chairs so you can look out to see while enjoying a pot of tea or an evening aperitif. The Bridal suite is more modern with its own separate sitting and dining areas, funky big bedroom and romantic double ended bath with fairy lights above. Junior suites are very comfortable indeed – we know because we stayed in one! These are very contemporary in layout with large window walls and patio doors onto balcony, small sitting room with flat screen TV and exquisitely equipped bathrooms complete with walk in showers. The fabrics and upholstery ooze old fashioned luxury taste and the beds are a dream to sleep in!
As with all Good Food Ireland hotels here is yet another gourmet destination. German Head Chef Ulriche Hoech has been here for seven years working to create an a la carte and table d’hôte menu to please both residents and visitors alike. This avid gatherer and forager loves nothing better than going out to pick wild garlic, leeks and other leafy edibles from the woods nearby in spring and summer or some meaty mushrooms in the autumn mists. He has already established a herb patch in the grounds of the hotel and hopes to extend this to salads and some vegetables in the coming months. Aside from this he uses leaves and vegetables from a selection of local growers including Donnacha Fahey, brother of Roger of Linalla ice cream fame. Lamb, sausages and some cured meat comes from James McGeough of Oughterard, with fresh fish and shellfish from Galway Bay Seafoods. All these fine local ingredients go to make an exciting culinary palette with which to create the finest gourmet works of art.
The Connemara Coast has two restaurants. Daly’s is a family affair with a good all round choice of favourites loved by all ages. The Gallery is a showcase for the skills of the chef and this is where you will find the Chef’s tasting menu on the reasonably priced Table d’Hote menu. You could start with some Clew Bay Smoked Salmon and Seafood Roulade followed by a seasonal soup like the Cream of Vegetable and Wild Garlic, which we enjoyed. You could top that with James McGeough’s Connemara Lamb tasting plate, featuring rump, lamb mince burger and stuffed breast or the Slow Braised McGeough Belly of Pork and award winning smoked sausage. Fish lovers will enjoy Smoked Fresh Poached Haddock and Whole Grain Mustard Sauce or Connemara Kettle, a mix of fresh local seafood in Prawn Bisque served uniquely in hollowed out bread roll. Wines are chosen specially for the food, with a new list currently being devised featuring off the beaten track numbers from boutique wineries and organic producers. Enjoy all this fine wining and dining in a restaurant spread over two tiers looking out over that stunning view.
In the morning, Daly’s restaurant offers a veritable feast on the help yourself breakfast buffet, including home made pastries, scones and breads, Irish and continental cheeses, charcuterie, cereals, fresh fruit and yogurt. Cooked offerings include a hearty bowl of porridge with honey and cream, the traditional full Irish perfectly cooked and presented or fresh fish of the day and sweeter plates. You’ll be fed, watered and ready to take that walk by the sea or just recline in one of the cosy downstairs lounge areas with the papers. Residents have their own private lounge on the upper floor furnished with comfy sofas with a library, chesseboards and other things to keep you occupied if all you want is rest and relaxation.
For bigger groups, there are conference facilities and a lovely function room, which caters weddings and special celebrations. The Connemara Hotel is a gourmet and relaxation destination – we can’t wait to go back there!
