Stradbally is home to a major Irish music event, The Electric Picnic takes place here every September and for the last couple of years Chris Maguire’s Stradbally Fayre fast food van has provided organic burgers and home made chips to a hungry crowd of music lovers. His fabulous Stradbally Fayre café and deli is on the main street of the town right across the road of the main entrance to this music event. It’s an all year round stop for any food lover.
Chris has run the business for the past two years working alongside Sister Esther who is the chef. Between them they run a slick and stylish operation that wouldn’t be out of place on any street in London, Paris, New York or Rome. The interior is plush, modern, bright and spacious. Outside is room to sit down and watch the world go by. Food is funky and home made – based on light bites and more substantial lunch dishes and features organic meats, burgers and sausages from fellow Good Food Ireland member Coolanowle House and Organic Farm. Jimmy and Bernadine Mulhall who own the farm are Chris’s in-laws!
Esther’s ethos is to keep the cooking pure and simple. To this end she has created an extensive menu of snacks and more filling dishes designed to please a crowd. Everyday a black board behind the counter displays the daily specials. The day starts here with breakfast served till noon. It could be organic sausages and bacon with local black and white pudding, free range eggs and mushrooms and comes as a full or mini Irish breakfast. Or you can choose free range eggs cooked just how you like them. Lighter breakfasts include homemade pancakes with a choice of toppings and hot homemade porridge with honey or maple syrup. You can accompany this with a glass of freshly squeezed orange juice or one of the artisan made Ballycross Apple pressed juices for a healthy perfect start.
At lunch tastes turn to a selection of sandwiches and wraps with a choice of fillings displayed in the salad and deli counter. There’s always a soup of the day served with Esther’s brown bread. Or check the board for her specials – which include a quiche of the day and a hot main course. The day we visited it was Organic lamb stew – slow cooked and delicious. Chips here are to die for – home made and crispy and perfect with any of the mains – and with generous helpings of the house salads also on show at the deli counter. If you are a burger fan you won’t do better than here with one of Coolanowle’s organic beef burgers served with homemade chips and salad. This familiar fast food favourite rises to gourmet levels at Stradbally Fayre! Other menu mains are House Lasagne with organic beef or meaty Steak Sandwich on ciabatta bread; you’ll be spoiled for choice.
Desserts are influenced by season so there will be things that change with whatever is available. Firm favourites always feature like light as a feather home made scones with home made preserves, house chocolate slices and pastries and farmhouse ice creams from nearby Rossmore Farmhouse too. Just take a glance at the chilled dessert cabinet to see what’s there – we enjoyed a particularly scrumptious and wonderfully old fashioned trifle with layers of fruit, soaked sponge, real custard and cream. A range of coffees and teas, Ballycross juices, wines and Blarney Blonde beer is also available. At the entrance to the café, modern wooden display shelves house a number of products from Good food Ireland members, The Chocolate Garden of Ireland treats, Sowan’s bread mixes,Lorge Chocolates, Noodle House pastas, G’s Jams and others. All in all, it’s a one stop shop for some good food and culinary retail therapy.
