It’s the little things that count! The first thing we notice on arrival at Mary Kathryn Murphy’s cute deli shop in Kildare town is the bunch of sunflowers in the window. Their brilliant yellow speaks of sunny days and summer food we are at once drawn us in. They are just the first of many such details that reassure us that Mary Kathryn is a serious operator with a talent for not just cooking but for hospitality, style and presentation.
The shop is pristine, a really fantastic, simple space which doubles as her production kitchen for the many outside functions and parties for which she caters. The flowers sit in a bright, alcove with French style windows that open wide to embrace the day. The shelves are piled high with familiar Good Food Ireland favourites such as Janet’s Country Fayre, Paddy’s O’Granola and G’s Gourmet Jams and again, these names remind us that Mary Kathryn cares a great deal about the provenance of her produce.
And what produce it is! Bowl after bowl overflows with salads, meats, breads and condiments. Plates are piled high with tantalising cakes, pastries and desserts. We try a salad bowl with home roasted Irish Chicken, boned and rolled ham and finely shredded carrot salad made with vegetables from Rooney’s local farm, dressed simply with tarragon and olive oil. Neither can we resist a tasty pasta with fresh basil and sun dried tomato or a noodle salad with spring onion, coriander and mint. Homemade soda bread with sunflower seeds is fresh, healthy and divine and free-range egg salad made with eggs from Leo Hamilton’s hens is almost as good. Afterwards, a cup of good coffee and a slice each of simple Victoria sponge and a slab of Mary Kathryn’s (by now famous) chocolate biscuit cake ends a truly delicious lunch.
If you’re feeling lazy, short on time or just want to impress your friends, there is also a range of take home suppers available. Choose from such delights as chickpea and paprika stew, Irish beef meatballs or Kilmore Quay fish pie, each as inventive and lovingly prepared as the last as the deli counter offerings.
Mary Kathryn’s deli is a rare treasure. She knows her food inside out, understands the importance of local, seasonal sourcing and applies it exactingly to what she is doing. It is a real testimony to the quality of her cooking that, when the bell rings at break time in the local school, there is a queue of children, from twelve to seventeen years old waiting to buy lunch from Mary Kathryn’s Deli. Together with her team, she does a wonderful job in a lovely space and long may that continue!
