You could be fooled into thinking you are in California if you eat at Fishy Fishy Cafe on a sunny day. Martin and Marie Shanahan are seafood heros and their famous daytime restaurant in this pretty harbour town is influenced by easy, West Coast living, from Martin's time spent working there and enjoying the bounty of the region. He has brought this inspiration home to roost in Kinsale, offering the best quality seafood presented in his own inimitable style. The constant queue at Fishy Fishy’s original small shop and café in the heart of the town dictated the need for this second, larger premises by the sea front. The indoor seating space has light and airy ultra-modern surroundings, complemented with a fabulous outdoor courtyard with tables shaded by mature trees and huge garden umbrellas.
Local boats bring in the fish, and individual fishermen are even named on the menu. Martin knows them personally, and can even find out what they have on the boat before they bring the catch into land, then plan menus accordingly. His Fresh Local Prawn Scampi in Crisp Golden Crumb come napkin wrapped, presented in a glass tumbler with home made chunky chips and an half oyster shell of tartar sauce - and are simply to die for!
The house speciality, Warm Chilli Seafood Salad, is a tumble of fish and shellfish in a sweet-spicy sauce on mixed leaves, using local crab when in season. Or choose a live lobster from the tank, served grilled, fresh oysters au naturel and daily specials like Haddock in Kinsale Beer Batter. The good thing here is that the menu offers prices for taster sized portions and mains, so just as we did, you can mix and match, and have two smaller portions if you fancy more than one thing to try. The chances are you will. Wines are suitably complimentary to seafood, with a list featuring everything from affordable favourites to extravagances like Puligny –Montrachet. And the queue is still endless, but well worth enduring.

Fishy Fishy is just about the best restaurant in Kinsale. Fresh seafood, playfully prepared, artfully presented. The decor is pleasing and there is plenty of people watching opportunity in the very busy venue. Be sure to make reservations well in advance or you are likely to be disappointed about getting in.
I visited Fishy Fishy in august of 2009. I was traveling Ireland with my family. We ate at many resteraunts, had many different things. We all love seafood so we had many a meal that revolved around the fresh fish. We ate at Fishy Fishy one night, and by far had the best seafood chowder on the whole trip. I think I tried 8 different ones. It had all the right balance of seafood, to liquid, and seasonings. Make a reservation though because they book up.
