Fallon & Byrne

Dublin  |  Dublin

Restaurant, Deli-Café, Food hall and Wine Cellar

What did we ever do without Fallon and Byrne?! The stunning, former telephone exchange has long been a landmark building in the metropolis and now it has taken an indispensable place in our culinary landscape too. In food terms, it is perhaps THE most diverse one-stop-shop and a veritable Mecca for Irish food lovers.

The first thing you notice, on entering at ground level from Dublin’s Exchequer Street, is the wonderful feature-filled room, complete with parquet flooring and aisles and aisles of food. There is everything from fish to organic meats, locally grown vegetables, small-farm dairy produce and artisan cheeses. Many Good Food Ireland favourites can be found on the shelves here including Ditty's Bakery, Durrus Farmhouse Cheese, Glenilen Farm, G’s Gourmet Jams, Gubbeen, Janet’s Country Fayre, Llewellyn's Orchard Produce, Karmine Apple Juice, Mella's Fudge, Seymours Fine Foods, Ummera Smokehouse, James McGeough’s cured and smoked meats, Kelly's Puddings, Crowes Meats and a myriad other local, hand-made products all nestling comfortably alongside fine artisan foods from farther flung countries.

Running along the back wall is a deli and hot counter with daily changing offerings from the talented team upstairs and from here, we frequently take home a comforting supper of free-range Irish chicken, artisan pork and leek sausages or spiced Irish lamb with tabbouleh. Indeed, the fishcakes and lentil salad are, by now, the stuff of legend!

Just beside the hot counter, the deli bar serves up some of the best, gourmet sandwiches in the city. The ‘Humdinger’ is our current favourite, roasted local vegetables, pungent artisan goat’s cheese and organic leaves, served on house bread, followed by a big slab of carrot cake with a steaming cup of Michael Kelly’s hand-roasted Ariosa coffee…heaven!

The cosy basement is home to one of Ireland’s most novel wine shops. The shelves are stacked high with serious wines from the old and new worlds and more importantly, staff are finely attuned and trained to give helpful advice on food pairings and wines for every occasion. While browsing, why not taste a few bottles and match them with a smoked duck salad or an Irish smoked salmon plate from the cellar menu. When feeling really indulgent, we like to share a plate of Irish oysters and a couple of glasses of crisp Riesling…the perfect post-work treat!

Upstairs, the restaurant is housed in one of Dublin’s most spectacular rooms. The space is beautifully lit, with windows on one wall and antique mirrors on the other, creating an atmospheric dining hall, redolent of Paris in the thirties. Cushioned Bentwood chairs and brass railed banquettes complete the look. The menu is a perfect combination of classical French cooking, bistro classics along with a serious nod to Irish produce and its producers. We start with a creamy white onion soup with just a hint of truffle and follow with a succulent fillet if Irish Pollack, roast potatoes and organic courgette ribbons. We finish with a selection of Irish farmhouse cheeses and some homemade bred, crackers and chutney…delicious!

The top floor ‘exchequer room’ repeats the simple, understated design motifs of the lower floors but to even greater effect. The location is stunning…a large, light filled expansive room with reclaimed wooden floors and a fantastic bar spanning the width of one end of the room. Here, the kitchen brigade really showcase their skills, offering a sit down events menu to groups of up to one hundred and or a’ tapas ‘menu for even more. Choose from the likes of seared Clare Island salmon with dill and shrimp ragout or slow roasted leg of Irish lamb with sweet potato, fig and mint jus. It’s no surprise that with this room and their new, wedding planning service, Fallon and Byrne looks set to be the prime, city centre venue for foodie brides-to-be everywhere!

There is no doubt that Fallon and Byrne is a serious destination for Irish food lovers…. worth a detour no matter where you are in Ireland. For a real exposé of Irish producers, it’s up there with the best in Ireland. Miss it at your peril!
