The town of Castlebar has been on the food trail for many years but the opening of a second branch of Café Rua has established it as one of the very best in the west. The idea behind the second café is very simple – allow customers to eat delicious local food and also to buy to take home. Space in the original café in town didn’t allow this concept to develop, so Aran and Colleen McMahon set about locating a second premises and Spencer Street suits them admirably.
Having sourced the best of local ingredients for some 10 years now for the original café, these are now available to buy in the deli downstairs. Beautifully laid out, there’s a range of freshly baked bread – they bake twice daily – scones and muffins. If you need to eat gluten free products, breads and scones can be ordered. There has been an increased demand for their ‘cake away’ business with a selection that includes roulades, sticky toffee, lemon drizzle and apple pies, products that are available on the shelves at weekends. Brownies, lemon butter squares, apple and walnut muffins and other individual cakes are also available. The deli offers a lunchtime menu of seasonal soups, stews, hotpots, hot and cold sandwiches, mini tartlets and Java Republic organic coffee. Many of these are available to take home, as are the homemade chutneys, salad dressings, pate, and hummus.
Wondering where you can buy the best of Good Food Ireland members produce and more? Well, wonder no more as Rua is the exclusive retail outlet in Mayo for many products including organic vegetables, Noodle House Organic Pasta, Sheridans Cheeses, Gubbeen Smokehouse sausages, bacon and cheese, Sean Kelly’s Meats, St Tola Goats Cheese, Cashel Blue Crozier Blue Farmhouse Cheese, Mella’s Fudge and David Llewellyn’s delicious apple juice are available.
Upstairs is the café, a bright and friendly space. Where they serve and are fiercely proud of their delicious breakfast menu with everything from the full Irish to the perfect bacon sandwich. Or why not try the organic porridge with apples or the homemade granola for a change? On Saturdays, you can enjoy buttermilk pancakes with crispy bacon and maple syrup.
There are supper deals on the menu at about 5pm each evening and if you want to enjoy an Evening at Rua on the last Friday of the month, booking is essential.
There are hampers for all occasions, ready made or you can create your own. And if you have a special party coming up, Rua can supply all the café favourites – their wonderful fishcakes, chicken korma, honey roasted loin of bacon and quiches are just some of the products available. And of course, the birthday cake, trifle, sponge cakes or that all-time favourite, Pavlova.
What a wonderful asset Cafe Rua is for Castlebar. The cafe is delightful upstairs, with bright decor and delicious food. The wait staff is friendly and efficient. Downstairs is the deli where you can pick up any number of gourmet items to go, many of which I havent seen available anywhere else, and just about all sourced from local producers. Well done Yum
We stopped by for lunch yesterday and the place was hopping. Not a table available and plenty waiting to be seated. No problem, the staff politely arranged for tables to be shared and all were accommodated without hesitation. The buzz was vibrant, the service was exceptional, the food was excellent. The only complaint I could have is that the soup was not listed as an option on the menu board and it was an amazing looking mushroom soup - my favorite. It was too late for me as I had ordered the warm chicken salad, which was delectable. The panini were perfect as well. The shop downstairs offered plenty of delectable items to take home, including many we had never seen anywhere before. Thanks and know that we will be back again.
