Warm and welcoming, the Oarsman on Bridge Street is a pub and café that has few equals around the country. Of course, this is not at all surprising as brothers Ronan and Conor Maher, seventh generation, have been reared in the hospitality business – their parents are Tom and Rosaleen Maher, now running Hollywell House in the town. The family has been some 200 years in the business so there’s no doubt it’s in the blood.
Downstairs, the bar is traditional, with welcoming fires and wooden furniture, it’s a place where locals and tourists sit comfortably. Upstairs, the restaurant has delightful window tables overlooking the hustle and bustle of the street below. But the main emphasis is on the food. It’s obvious there’s a strong kitchen team at work behind the scenes as food is always of the highest quality. Lunch is served in the bar and the restaurant while dinner, available from Thursday to Saturday evenings, is upstairs.
The lunch menu offers dishes that include organic pasta, smart sandwiches and wraps, daily specials and seafood. You could try a tortilla wrap filled with blackened Cajun chicken, mixed pepper salsa, sweet chilli mayo, spiced diced potato, cucumber and yoghurt dip or spicy potato fish cakes, salad, mango & red onion salsa, lemon and crème fraîche. There’s also the bubble and squeak potato cake, served with sautéed spinach and field mushroom, onion rings, poached egg in a butter cream sauce. There are daily specials on the blackboard – I chose chicken fillet stuffed with black pudding, an absolute delight. Desserts are a speciality here so you could try the chocolate plate, a must for chocolate lovers, or perhaps layered raspberry tiramisu, lemon mascarpone mousse, and lime noodles.
Dinner has wonderful dishes that include Thornhill duck confit and pan seared scallops to start, tournedos of Irish Hereford beef or pan-fried free-range chicken fillet. The Mahers source local products and producers all named on their menu, to ensure a consistent supply of excellent food many of whom are some of Good food Ireland’s well loved and trusted members such as Coopershill Venison, Gubbeen Smokehouse, Noodle House Organic Pasta, Corleggy Cheeses, Connemara Smokehouse and O'Doherty's Fine Meats.
Carrick-on-Shannon nestles on the most scenic stretch of the Shannon and is also surrounded by some of the most beautiful and unspoilt scenery in Ireland, it’s a delightful town to stroll around but make sure you visit the Oarsman to complete your visit.
