Magical would seem to be the appropriate word for the Chez Emily Chocolate Boutique on Ashbourne’s Main Street. The shop front design with its two large windows offer a tantalising glimpse of the treasures inside, and oh what treasures! With a selection of over 30 different types, the counter is chock-a-block with the most delicious-looking individual chocolates – rum and raisin, cognac, vanilla, crème caramel are just some of the tempting names. Flake truffle supreme, amandine, (truffle coated in roasted almond flakes), cocoa delights, chocolate Florentines, candied orange segments, cherry liqueurs – even the names conjure up images of delights to come.
There are shelves of speciality boxes, beautifully wrapped and tied with ribbons; there are seasonal figurines, white Easter eggs, and novelty items such as chocolate mobile phones. You can send a chocolate message – choose from happy birthday, congratulations, I love you and more.
Chez Emily was established in 1996 by Ferdinand Vandaele & Helena Hemeryck. After gathering experience in Belgium they decided to start their own artisan chocolate outlet and it was Ashbourne’s luck that allowed these experts to open their chocolate boutique here. Ferdinand & Helena import the chocolate coverture and combine it with the best local ingredients using family recipes. Everything is manufactured at the plant in Coolquay, not too far down the road. Ferdinand is the Chocolatier, while Helena manages the boutique and you can also find Ferdinand selling in the Temple Bar market every Saturday, where they have built a justifiably loyal following and a few awards along the way too including a Great Taste Award in 1999. You can also find some of their divine handmade chocolates in fellow Good Food Ireland member Donnybrook Fair in Dublin.
Back to their Chocolate Boutique in Ashbourne there are four tables where you can sit and enjoy a cup of the best Ariosa coffee and perhaps a chocolate cake or dessert to accompany it. And if you want to buy coffee beans to take home, you’ll find another Good Food Ireland member Pónaire’s coffee beans on the shelf, as well as cafetieres and coffee pots. Take home a jar of the chocolate spread or the wicked chocolate fudge sauce, so wonderful you’ll eat it by the spoonful straight from the jar - pure indulgence but we think you deserve it!
