Daytime Café

Residents of Thomastown, Co Kilkenny must consider themselves extremely lucky since December 2007 when Jackie Hoyne opened the Blackberry Café, they have been able to partake of good home cooking at its best.

And Jackie’s choice of location couldn’t be better. For seventy-one years, until December 2003, this was the workplace of renowned cobbler, Billy O’Reilly. The old shop was been restored with great love and attention including the 18th century frontage. The wonderful large Georgian panelled windows sparkle, paintwork is a fresh tea green and pride of place is a magnificent sculptured blackberry. Jackie has already picked up an award in the Tidy Towns competition as last year, her café was Kilkenny National Winner for Best Shopfront.

Inside, the high ceiling gives a bright airy feel, and the specially made furniture is also painted in tea green. This includes a counter and a wonderful dresser that has pride of place against the wall. Comfortable seats are dotted around the interior, with tables set beside the windows allowing for views along the main street.

The traditional cooking wonderfully enhances the old-fashioned look and feel. Jackie bakes every day, producing delicious scones – the secret is real butter and local free-range eggs- cakes and tarts, fresh from the oven. There’s traditional soda bread to eat with the day’s freshly made soup or you can choose a soda bread sandwich with a choice of two fillings. Other sandwiches are made from local ingredients including fellow Good Food Ireland member Knockdrinna Farmhouse Cheese on delicious multigrain bread.

With consistent high quality a priority, Jackie is adamant in her belief that natural is best so she uses nothing artificial, just fresh wholesome ingredients.

As a regular visitor to Ireland, I am always looking for somehere special to eat. The Balackberry Cafe is a gem of delicious healthy food and the breakfast I had was outstanding. I would strongly recommend making a visit to the Blackberry Cafe for the food and the friendly staff. They deserve a Michlen star Stephen English Wimbledon, London,UK
