David Llewellyn found his first orchard in 1999, whilst working for an apple grower in North County Dublin. He leased the piece of land and starting growing apples for himself and just nine years later, he’s masterminded a range of juices, cider, cider vinegar, balsamic cider vinegar and Lusca Irish wine from his own vineyards in Lusk.
Nowadays, David can’t grow enough fruit for his production, so he supports other local growers who supply best quality fruit specially for him. Apples come from Boyne Grove Fruit Farm in Drogheda, Dunedin Farms, Kilkenny, and fellow Good Food Ireland members The Apple Farm in Tipperary and Ballycross Apple Farm in Wexford. His interest in wine spurred the hobby growing of grapes, which in turn has become another string in the Llewellyn bow, with the making of Irish wine. All the products have had great acclaim from experts, food writers and retailers who all love what they have seen and tasted. David’s ethos of producing wholesome, simple, natural products and achieving quality by using locally grown fruit carefully has been at the conception of this range.
Llewellyn’s Apple Juice is pure apples in a glass! This superlative quality juice gives a real wake up call to the taste buds first thing in the morning, and makes a super drink any time of day. Double L Real Cider is made from fresh pressed Irish apples, naturally fermented without the water, sugar, glucose syrup, apple concentrate or artificial colours and flavours which invade mass-produced offerings. Llewellyn’s Cider Vinegar is natural fermented from the farm’s own cider, and works superbly well in vinaigrettes or as a citric addition to a pork casserole at the last minute. Balsamic Cider vinegar is quite unlike it’s Italian counterpart, made entirely from apples, to produce a heady smooth and fruity vinegar superb for dressing little leaves, or enriching beef stew or roast beef gravy.
The Lusca wine range includes a fabulous red made from a blend of David’s Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot grapes, and two crisp, dry varietal wines from Sauvignon Blanc or Chardonnay. The whites are refreshing and youthful, whilst the red can be drunk at around two years, but has the capacity for ageing on to produce a much more sophisticated taste.
Find the juices and vinegars in Superquinn nationwide and and fellow Good Food Ireland Members including Café Rua in Castlebar and Fallon & Byrne on Exchequer Street Dublin. David trades regularly at markets in Temple Bar and Dun Laoghaire and of course, you can buy direct from the farm in Lusk, Co Dublin.
If you haven't tried David's products you really are missing out!
I absolutely adore their apple juice. I think it is a taste of heaven on earth. Im visiting Ireland, for the first time, and I tasted their apple juice at Nimmos for lunch. What an amazing experience Ive tried looking for this product everywhere in Galway, then in Dublin, and Ive yet to find it. Id love to see it in US markets, such as Cost Plus Imports, or Trader Joes. Does anyone know if this company has a tour? Id love to see how they make this incredible concoction. J. Evangelina Mtn. View, CA, USA
