Gleesons Gourmet Food, Delicatessen & Wine Shop has an air of establishment about it. Solid wooden shelving, pale colours and a sense of order prevail. A surprise to learn then that this brainchild of husband and wife team Mary and Eamonn Gleeson of Gleeson's Townhouse & Restaurant, is only in its infancy.
What this artisan food and wine shop shows however, is a lifetime of thought, passion and commitment from the owners. The shelves are stocked with carefully chosen product, the wine selection features bottles not encountered in every supermarket in the land and scones and soda bread baked each and every day from core ingredients.
Producers and products to draw attention to include Mossfield Organic Cheeses, Noodle House Organic Pasta that is made in Sligo, Sean Kelly’s famous Black Pudding from Mayo, Seamus Moran’s Lotide seaweed sausages, Ballycross Apple Juice and chutneys that are made in the shop to name just a few examples.
If you are shopping for supper there are trays of lasagne, an aubergine and courgette bake and everyday a substantial main course like chicken tagine, which will have come straight from the couple’s café a few doors down the street. This really is home cooked food that just happens to be cooked in a shop.
